Audio Levels - dialogue & music
by Alex Gill on May 27, 2008 at 4:59:44 pm

Hello,

what is the standard for dialogue and music when editing a program for
NTSC broadcast? Levels, Panning?, - basically, the rule of thumb
when editing audio of a tv program that has dialogue and a music track.

Thanks

Don't peak above -12db...well, might be able to a LITTLE. My mixer never goes above -12db digital. And then there is no magic formula like "narration and dialog at -18 to -12db, and music at -23db when under dialog or narration." Mix to your ear. Can you hear the music? Is it overpowering the dialog?

As a broadcast audio pro, I have posted many time here at the cow about broadcast levels. A search of this forum alone will bring up many rants, but to save you the trouble, here are a few pointers.
