Render problems between FCP 5 & imac8,1?

Hi, new here, excuse me if I've klutzed in through the wrong door, I searched for a similar thread but found none that fit the bill.
I'm just wondering if any one has experienced any issues and/or revelations with solving the render problems occurring between FCP v.5 and the new iMac8,1 (2.4GHz/3GB ram).
Just got this computer last week, it seemed to work fine, and now it crashes whenever I attempt to render clips in overlaid opacities or with any effect filters applied.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated, - again sorry, I am a simpleton when it comes to acronyms, codes or abbreviated names for things, so please speak slowly :^)
