Moving QT files from a Mac to a Windows machine?
by Martin Gaxiola on May 23, 2008 at 5:15:55 am

I know that this question may be pretty rudimentary, but I am a recent Mac convert. I need to transfer some QT video files (10GB each) to a colleague of mine who uses Windows XP. I am trying to figure out how to best transfer the raw file to him.

I have a portable hard drive that I can format/reformat as needed to get job done. I currently have it formated as Mac Journaled but his Windows computer could not read the drive (naturally). Is there a hard drive format that allow me to copy the QT files from my Mac to the drive, to succesfully connect the hard drive to the Windows machine and copy the files over?

Or is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!!

Hi Martin,
There is a little application call "MacDrive". You install it in the PC and you can manage all th Mac formated volumes. Works great and is only few dollars.
Just make sure that your QT files are wrote in a codec supported by QT Windows.

Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17"Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17"
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

That is a cool program, but I think that I will be doing this alot in the future.

I do not think that this is a long-term solution for multiple clients.

Any other suggestions?

Here is your problem. The only hard drive format that can be read and written to by both mac & PC is FAT32 and it has a 4GB file limit.

You will ether need to copy the file across a network to a PC or use the program mentioned in the previous post.

Before you do anything. What codec does is your QuickTime in? It may not even play on a PC.

Ok - I think I have found a transfer solution via VMWare Fusion and Windows XP running on the same Mac.

Next Question: What QT codec do I have to convert to for Windows XP to read it? And how do I do this in FCP? (QT Conversion, but what settings?)

You should also have a look in the "Apple-Window on Intel" Forum. You may find a better solution.
About codecs you should have a look to the options that you have in QT Pro for Windows.
Codecs like Proress or Apple 8/10b Unc, do not open in Windows. You can use free three-parts codecs like BM or AJA. That depends of your footage's codec.

Martin

are ypu PC users doing effects and such?

Natively, macs and PC's can share drives if they are formatted FAT32, however this presents a 4gB file limit. the easiest way around this is to save your files as Pict or Tiff Sequences ie a series of still frames. you can save the audio as a wav or aif

the PC user can import these into any application, and sometimes make a real time playable file from them.

other ways would involve special codecs and archiving and thats just nuts.

if your pc users just want to view the stuff, make DVDs!

hope this helps

I am thinking about outsmarting the system. I think that I can transfer the large video files to a NTFS formated drive via Windows XP on VMWare Fusion. Since I have full access to the Mac hard drive via VMWare Fusion, I should be able to transfer the files that way. I will experiment with this later today and post the results.

I just need to make sure the the QT files are readable via my end-user's computer.

Do a Google search for "MacFuse" - it can give you read/write access to NTFS disks on Tiger or Leopard.
