HDV Format/Grading issues
by Dan Turner on May 9, 2008 at 5:35:52 am

Hi everyone, my first post here.

I've read around this issue a lot, and I've understood a fair bit, but the details of this still baffle me slightly.

We shot a music video using Canon A1, and captured as HDV 1080 50i (I wasn't aware at the time of Pro-Res speriority).
It has all been edited in HDV, uncompressed, and has a lot of scaling, time remapping, Twixtor etc etc.

Now, as is always the way, I have just found out Pro-Res is a superior format, and also a lot better for grading. Should I re-compress the whole timeline to pro-res? What is the best way to do this, bear in mind there is a LOT of time remapping etc, given the music video format.

How does this work with sequences etc in FCP?

Finally, the project size is something like 1920x1440, none of my scaling (applied to make camera-work more dynamic) goes about 140%, which is obviously quite a lot, but there we are. What are the best settings for re-compression given this?

Thanks a lot in advance, sorry my first issue is so involved, I really hope someone here can help...

Dan,

I hate to give you bad news, but...

Actually, the solution is really just a button push away.

Since you're already done, just duplicate the timeline, and in the Sequence menu click on Settings and you will see "Quicktime Compressor." Change the compressor to ProRes or ProRes HQ (larger file size) and then rerender the sequence.

That's all..

[Dan Turner] " the project size is something like 1920x1440"
Dan,
This quite off-standard size. In which format do you intend to distribute your movie?

Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17"Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17"
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

What Grading issues? Color and ProRes?
by Jeff Coleman on May 9, 2008 at 3:27:35 pm

Dan,
What are the "grading issues" you are or intend to deal with? Are you planning on using Color on your clips?
If the clips are recaptured as ProRes will Color actually handle them okay? I've heard there's been some issues in this regard, could someone enlighten us please if this is the case?
