Hello all,
I've been approved for 2008's budget to upgrade my G4 to a G5 and my FCPHD 4.5 to Final Cut Studio. I've also purchased a Panasonic HVX200. I think I neglected to include an HD output device. I have $4300.00 for the Mac and the FCS upgrade. I was hoping to get another P2 card (I only have 1 4Gig). Now I'm thinking; can I continue to shoot on MiniDV tape using the HVX200, say in 720p, input that via firewire to FCS and have enough left to purchase a Sony HVR-M25U? Is this a reasonable workflow for HD production?

Well, that's a bummer. I guess I'm not ready for the full HD jump just yet. Should I buy the deck or more cards? I mean if I buy more cards, I can shoot in 720p but I can't deliver a finished product without down converting to MiniDV or Beta SP. If I buy the deck I'll be ready to output to an HD format as well as import HD footage I might get from outside sources.

The Sony HVR-M25U is HDV. HD broadcast output goes to DVC Pro 100 or HDCam or HDCamSR or D5 formats. HDV is currently an acquisition format. You can shoot 720p but your final output for broadcast will be to the above formats adding 3:2 pulldown. If you are creating corporate or web video you can output Quicktimes to DVD so no tape is needed. You'll just have to make sure the end user can play progressive video into their viewing system.

OK, so given my budget restrictions, if I got a JVC-BRHD50U and shot in 720P edited in 720P and outputted to 720P onto MiniDV would it be acceptable for broadcast? This would be for something like inserting tags at the end of 30sec spots.

I think you're missing it here, Agnes...
What we are trying to say is that there is no broadcaster out there that will accept HDV on a MiniDV tape.
If you go to MiniDV tape, you'll have to downconvert to standard def signal for it to be acceptable to a few that will accept it.
Almost all broadcasters will only accept BetaSP, DigiBeta, DVCPro, DVCProHD, or HDCAM. That's all. I haven't found a broadcaster that will accept MiniDV anymore but that doesn't mean they won't.
The key here is to figure where you are going to broadcast and contact them about acceptable formats. There are a few still accpeting DVCAM. Just check with them before purchasing something that will do you no good.

Wow, I didn't know what I was getting into here. This is a lot to think about. I will call the local broadcasters and see what is acceptable to them. Thank you all.

One thing is you should just forget about buying an HDV deck. It is a step in the wrong direction for you. An HDV deck only makes sense if you shoot an HDV camera. Buy a 32GB card instead. You can rent decks or supply projects on hard drives if you have to.
Don't buy a G5, get a newer Mac Pro with an intel processor and PCI-E slots. That way you are more future proof when adding peripherals.

As you've already been told in this thread, you cannot record HD to tape using the HVX-200. You're also trying to mix two different formats for your HD workflow which is not going to work for optimum picture quality.
The HVX-200 is DVCPro HD. The Sony is HDV. HDV is much more highly compressed than DVCPro HD. By taking your HVX-200 material and then "mastering" it to HDV, you're degrading the quality. Whether for broadcast or archiving, this is not a recommended workflow for DVCPro HD acquired material.
If you want an HD recorder, at the very least you want a Panasonic 1400 which will set you back about $21,000 or so. You can also rent these for around $600/day.
Also, your budget of $4,300 is probably going to just cover the cost of your Mac Pro and the upgrade. Not sure you're going to have any money available after that for anything else.

What you might want to do, is invest in a used beta SP deck, shoot all your material in HD, and deliver betasp masters, until you get the money to deliver on HD, or formats and files change, so you can just upload your videos to a server.
