iPhone OS 10.3.9 compatiblilty problem
by Dawn Whetzel on Jan 3, 2008 at 2:06:52 am

I just got a iPhone for Xmas... I am running OS 10.3.9 and it is incompatible. I am happy to upgrade, however I am also running Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 which is incompatible with OS X Leopard. I am wondering which operating system will work with both the iPhone and my version of Final Cut? Also, I have the following total system:

Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.6.0f1

You gotta activate this phone at an Apple store...and unfortunately not sync it with your computer...if this is the ONLY computer you have. DO NOT update it at all. Keep your production working machine as is. What you need is another Mac that you can use for other things, such as this. Sucks, but don't mess with a working editing system.

I went to a third party Mac store and was planning to upgrade to "Tiger" which is compatible with both.. ARE YOU SAYING, NO WAY?

I am always nervous about upgrading mid project. If you do...if you MUST...then please do yourself a favor and CLONE your system drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. This way you have a backup of your working OS in case anything starts not working.

Tiger is compatible with your version of FCP...it is just the upgrading process that might cause issues.

Just create a 2nd bootable drive on an external FW drive and put leopard on that. Then export your contacts out of iCal on the other OS and import them into iCal on Leopard, also store whatever music/video you wish to have on the iPhone.

[Shane Ross] "You gotta activate this phone at an Apple store...and unfortunately not sync it with your computer"

You really should sync it often! When ever you sync the iPhone iTunes makes a backup of it, this is important just incase you need to restore it if the software on it gets messed up (it happens sometimes, sometimes for no reason, sometimes a iPhone software update doesn't go through right and you must restore). It is also important to sync and back up the iPhone just incase it stops working and you have to have it replaced.

So just create a second boot drive with leopard on it!

Happy Editing To You!!
