New Keyboard Shortcuts

Has everyone seen the new timeline navigation keyboard shortcuts released in 6.0.2 (they are buried in the release notes)? I checked the archives here and haven't seen them listed.

Apple calls them CENTERED ZOOMING. Yes, now you can zoom in, out or to the playhead WITH THE PLAYHEAD CENTERED! YES... EVEN REGARDLESS OF SOMETHING BEING SELECTED!

Here's the quote directly from the release notes:

"New Playhead-Centered Zooming Commands in the Timeline

Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 includes three commands for playhead-centered zooming and navigation in the Timeline:

Zoom In on Playhead in Timeline: Keeps the Timeline playhead centered while zooming in (regardless of the selection in the Timeline).

Zoom Out on Playhead in Timeline: Keeps the Timeline playhead centered while zooming out (regardless of the selection in the Timeline).

Scroll to Playhead: Horizontally scrolls the Timeline so that the playhead is centered in the window.

These commands can be mapped to keyboard shortcuts using the Keyboard Layout window (choose Tools > Keyboard Layout > Customize)."

My new FAVORITES!
Jerry

Where are these wonderful tools located? Are they keyboard commands only or are they buried in the menus?

Wayne- tools>keyboard shortcuts>customize>type in the specific name>drag the shortcut to the keystroke you want (I used Z for zoom in, x for zoom out, and s for scroll to playhead).

Hope this helps,
jerry

I wouldn't give up the x key for anything, or the s key for the slip tool either. I use Opt-- and Opt-=, replacing the existing shortcuts. I never want to zoom into the selected item, unless the playhead's already over it.

All the best,

Tom

So basically... there's no menu item pointing to these commands. Just commands that I have to tell it by customizing my keyboard. Can't we have button to add to button bars?

It's available in the button list if you want to add it to a button bar.

Re: New Keyboard Shortcuts

I remapped the zoom to playhead to Cmd+ and Cmd- to serve as my main zoom since, I too, never zoom to selection. But it turns out it won't zoom in the Canvas or Viewer (to zoom in on a waveform in the Viewer, say), which is annoying. So I mapped it back to Option +/- and I more or less never use it now since I'm so used to Shift+Cmd+A'ing before zooming, it's more or less a reflex. This is a disappointing new feature. My two cents.

yes it's taken an age for FCP to get to where all the others were a decade ago.

We may soon even get a scrolling timeline, renameable tracks, track re-ordering.

There is still so much that Apple could do to improve the basic functionality of this programme.

Re: New Keyboard Shortcuts (make it default Apple)
by Anders Haavie on Jan 2, 2008 at 9:41:37 pm

The new zooming is great, and it should actually have been like that for ages. I was really getting tired of hitting deselect all everytime I had to zoom.

Apple should make this zooming the default way. It's that way in Avid, and I think it's much more logical. (hey.. I am NOT an avid guy, but Avid's got some of their stuff right)
