External hard drive for Mac

Happy New Year,
I am looking for a reliable and fast external hard drive, which I can store my projects in there and work off of. I use Final Cut Pro.
As of now I only have one external hard with the USB connection with my entire projects in there. I am afraid that it is going to die on me any minute and also I am having difficulty rendering my files specially the ones with more that 2 layers of images. I thought it might have been because of the USB connection.

I would take a look at some RAID 0 arrays that can connect via firewire 800 to not only provide you with ample amounts of storage space but can handle faster transfer rates as well.
I personally think the G-Technology GRaid2 drives and the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro are solid drives. There are a lot of other RAID 0 options out there and with the OWC drive you can do 1TB RAID-0 for only $359 (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/ME8SRS10TB32/)

The OWCs are cheaper than G-Technology and offer backup software. what would I lose if I go with OWC?
Should I get the ones including the eSATA? Would this help with the rendering or playback issues? (Considering I might have to get a eSATA-to-SATA bracket/cable-adapter, since I can

Warranties, extended service, known performance.
Cheaper in the video world often means failure, that along with the fact G-Tech has a proven track record in the video marketplace, even when something went wrong- they fixed it.

It should also be noted your CPU is a tad on the old side. It might struggle a bit with more advanced editing and rendering. You may want to try working with low-res quality media until the edit is finished then upres it again from tape. Also try to do your editing first and save more difficult effects for last.
You can also play around with the timeline settings and lower playback quality temporarily to get better performance.

We use the G-tech drives in our Mac Lab and in our studio. They are flawless, run quiet and cool. Lacie may have improved since the last time I used one but they tend to run very hot.

I've heard really good things about OWC and the G-Raid's... so all things being equal I'm the type of guy who will buy the cheaper one. But I haven't actually used both so I can't say how they compare head to head.
Also on your list - keep in mind that the RAID 0 configuration is going to give you much faster drive speed than their drive with a quad interface with only one drive.

DO NOT BUY LACIE.
I was on a project in the Bahamas with my brand new LaCie 320 Gig FW.
I had just formatted and installed the needed software the day before leaving, and everything tested out fine.
Drive DIED on the first night in Marsh Harbour, and LaCie was no help.
Would not ship a replacement, would not offer a solution, and cost me over $200 in cell phone bills while on hold with Tech.
They were my go to drives for 5 years, but they dropped the ball big time on this one.
I just bought my second WD 500 gig 16 meg, FW, and I love them. Fast, quiet, and they run.
