Capturing issues: Out of Sync & Phantom TC Breaks
by Mike Daniels (mikevbs) on Dec 6, 2007 at 6:29:05 pm

Hello Cow,

For the past few months my company has been have some serious problems capturing MineDV footage. We currently are running about 10 edit bays that are all connected to our Xsan. About 3-4 of these bays are capturing footage on a daily basis, sometimes 24 hours a day. Some footage is also captured to G-raid externals for out of house editors.

We shoot 90 percent of our footage on Panasonic P2 HVX200 using Panasonic DV tapes and shooting 24p. All footage is captured using various Sony decks(dsr-11, dsr-45, dsr-1500) via firewire.

The problems we are having consist of phantom TC breaks where a tape gets cut up into multiple clips some times even skipping over a minute or two of footage. These tapes have no TC breaks as they are recorded for 1 hour straight, with out being stopped.

The other bigger problem we are having is out of sync issues when capturing. Captured footage goes out of sync by a few seconds. We also get a warning after capturing that says
"validating audio" This started about 5-6 months ago maybe 1 tape every few days, now it is much more consistent, almost every other tape. We capture on average 60 hours a week.

We have been troubleshooting this problem for a few weeks now and have tried many different set ups including, new firewire cables, dumping prefs, making sure there is plenty of room on the Xsan or external drives, updated xsan software. Pretty much everything that was mentioned in previous post I had found about this subject.

Now we did try capturing a few tapes using our Panasonic cameras and didn't have any problems, could it be the mixing of Panasonic and Sony decks that is causing these problems?

FCP 5.1.4
tiger 10.4.11
QT 7.2
MacPro Dual Core Intel
5GB memory
Xsan

thanks for your help
-mike

Hey Mike

You may be on to something......

I recently purchased a new Sony deck and since then I have been getting those weird 'Validating Audio' windows that ruin the sync. It happens randomly.

I had a hunch that it was the deck, which is a shame because I just spend a lot of money on it.

My deck is a Sony HDV one...

I never had any problems with the DSR-11 though......

Hey Ben,

Yes we also have this "validating audio" problem with our HDV deck.

FYI, if you press cancel while it is "validating" the clip will be captured in-sync. You just have to import it from your finder as it will say it is offline

Hey Mike

I tried hitting cancel this morning and it worked. The problem is I have imported via telecine logs and I was not watching the computer while this happened.

I now have half a feature digitized and random clips are out of sync.

What's your plan? I am going to try and get in touch with someone at Sony about replacing this deck as it is only 1 month old....what a good time this will be.

Another issue that you might have is one that I ran into recently - disk speed, space, and location. I, too, have a Sony deck at work, and I personally have Canon cams and we sometimes get stuff from people who use Panasonics - and given that DV is a standard, it should all just work

Yes i too thought it might have to do with a full disk, Our Xsan is always close to being 80-90% full but then i also captured to an external drive that had a couple hundred gbs available and i still had sync problems.

But i do believe some of the problems such as Phantom TC breaks has to do with full drives.

Our next solution involves renting a Panasonic deck for a few days and see if we get any problems digitizing with that

I just fell upon your posts because I am having the same problem. I was wondering what deck everyone is using? It sounds like this might be a compatibility issue with a certain deck. I am also capturing mini-dv footage using a Sony HDV deck. The model is HVR-M15U and I am running final cut pro 6.0.1. If this is a deck issue, Sony and Apple should get together to find a patch for it. I was already successful with a similar issue with a JVC deck that was "supported" by apple for use with FCP but having compatibility problems and creating imaginary timecode breaks. In the end JVC and apple worked together to create a software upgrade that fixed the problem.

If you are using the same deck, please let me know. If it is a deck issue hopefully we can get a fix that will improve our post efficiency.

Thanks.

Arielle
