Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM Camera Editing Concerns
by Kevin Jones on Oct 25, 2007 at 2:06:32 pm

Hi,
I'm looking forward to the release of the new Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM camera.
Does anyone know of any possible conflicts or problems with my present editing set-up?
Hardware or Software?
Currently I am editing on a:

2.5GHz Quad-core PowerPC G5
4GB DDR533 NON ECC 4X1GB
2X500GB Serial ATA-7200rpm
16x SD DL(DVD-R/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GF 6600 256 SDRAM
Final Cut Studio 5.0.1
Boris FX 9

Thanks for the help.

Kevin Jones

are you using FCP 5.0.1 as you suggest or did you mean FCP 6.0.1? if you are using FCPv5.0.1 then you'll need to upgrade FCP as the codecs for XDCAM HD were not introduced until version 5.1.2

Any idea when the FCP version that will edit the XDcamEX format will be released by Apple?
Thanks!

[Kevin Jones] "Final Cut Studio 5.0.1 "

Native editing within the XDcamEX will not work with any version of FCP prior to 6.02 ( which is not yet released)

Hey Gary
Are you absolutely sure thats correct? My understanding is that the EX1 will record using the same codec as in the current crop of XDCAM HD cameras. Admittedly it will be wrapped in MP4 as opposed to using MXF but isn't the codec the same as before, as already supported as of FCP5.1.2.
Of course, built in support for the EX1 through FCP's Log and Transfer interface is not yet available (expected 6.0.2) but Sony's XDCAM Transfer 2.0 should allow for ingest to earlier versions of FCP, no?

Appreciate your insights
Andy

Andy, I am sure.
the fact that it is variant of the Mp4 ( Sony used their own version/ flavor of that compression internally in the MXF wrapper)
Part of the issue is that Sony is shipping the EX with both 1080 and 720 in a Long GOP format, and it is very different than JVC's 720 codec and compression so the tools need to be the newest.

This being said - that FCP5 software has the ability to capture the output of the HDSDI into FCP in anyway you choose.

I tested the EX after IBC and I am very impressed with what Sony has done.

Will a firewire 7200 rpm ata raid set up lkely be sufficient to store and run EX-1 files at the camera's fullest resolution? Or will something more robust likely be required?
