two dimensions wanted
by ibsmith on Oct 22, 2007 at 12:39:07 pm

I have a video that was shot in regular 4:3 720/480 dimension. I need that video to be dropped onto another video that is a custom dimension of 772/480. I have done this, though I loose all clarity of the original 4:3 video. Is there a correct way to do this properly, or even at all?

More specific information, in case you may be able to tell me how to set this up better:
Video 1, a man in front of a white screen shot in 720x460.
I edited his video on the timeline and left his sequence alone.

I created a new sequence with dimension 772x460, and created a Motion project that is text only, suppose to come up on the screen with what the man is talking about.
I then dropped the edited video 1 of the man into this sequence, but now the video has become blurry. I can't tell if it is because of the dimension difference, or because the Motion project interfering somehow. Though, I have deleted the Motion out, and the Video 1 (on sequence 2) is still blurry.

if you are stretching the smaller video by 40 pixels across the x axis then you will get a blurry smeary image. Same reason if you draw on a ballon with a marker pen then inflate the balloon - the image will stretch and smear. Pixels are a finite size and edit packages rarely add new ones to make up for your stretching exercises!

I have to ask - why are you creating a new sequence in this weird size?

Thank you for the reply...

Yes, I do understand the image stretching detail... and I like the "balloon" example you gave. This however isn't the exact issue.

I am trying to have a simple image of a man talking, with text bullet points coming up as he discusses a topic come up next to him. In order to make room for the text points, I took the 720x480 video of the man, and slid it to the left on the sequence (also 720x480), BUT that's where there's not enough room. I don't have enough room for the text at that dimension, or it will run off the page, or it would have to be condinsed too much if it were to stay on the page...SO, I want the background sequence to allow for more width.
Is there a more simple way to do this, and still being able to use the (already shot) 720x480 footage of the man.
The final video aspect ratio would be perfect if it were about 772x480, without the video of the man being scewed of course.
Does this answer everything?

I have already finished the projects, though I would like to know of a way to do exactly as discribed above.

okay - i see what you are trying to achieve. There are plenty of ways you can tackle this - all without changing the physical size of the video frame.

Firstly, more questions....

what is the background?
Is the man stood in front of a plain backdrop? Is he "chroma keyed"?
Is he stood centrally in the frame?

Assuming its a plain background and he is stood centrally, then you could try this....duplicate the shot and layer them directly on top of each other. On the top layer use the position tool to move the image to the left (or right) until the man is positioned where you want him. Apply a crop to the right hand edge of the frame with a feather setting to soften the crop. Blur the lower layer this will have the effect of extending the background on one side.

Alternately you could try crop the man more closely and layer him over an artificial background. How you do that is up to you - there are as many methods as there are editors using them!

Or - perhaps you could create a completely new shot by taking a photo of a TV in a suitable location, then crop and distort the man to appear as if he is in the tv screen with the text appearing elsewhere in the frame. Obviously context is important here - only you know what would be suitable for the shot. Have fun, experiment and think outside the box (pun intended !!)

One final thing to bear in mind - if this was being made to view on a tv, then widening the frame of the edit would only cause the final edit to look wrong. A tv has a specific width and height, and the image you put into it must match up otherwise your image will distort. Your tv might shrink the image to fit the width, causing the height to shrink by the same amount and thus you will have black gaps at top and bottom. Or it may scale to fit by height in which case parts of your image will get cut off at either side.

Its sensible practice to stick with the tried and tested standard dimensions, and change your composition to reflect this.
