I need to output a video with an aspect ratio of 768x288 onto a mini DV using a Sony hvr-m25u deck. This ratio is customized for a large stadium video board. I'm editing in FCP and have the sequence set with the custom aspect ratio, however i can't get the video to output with this custom aspect ratio. Any idea how to do this?

DV is 720x480, nothing more nothing less. So you either have to distort the image to fit it on the tape in hopes that they can then "undistort" it on the other end, or figure out a different way to deliver the media that isn't on videotape. A quicktime movie or image sequence comes to mind. Since they deal with this aspect ratio all the time, I'm sure a phone call to someone over there will set you straight.

As Jeremy says, in a MiniDV tape you can only print PAL or an NTSC video signal (720x576 or t20x480). I think that what your customer is giving you is the size of a letterbox. They want to show something annamorphic in a 4x3 monitor.
If is like that (too many guessing) just make a new sequence NTSC (I guess) 4x3 and in thesetting set 768x288. If you have FC2, in "Users Preferences" >Editing: Uncheck "Always scale clips to sequence size. Like that your (I guess) DV footage is cropped to the sequence size. When the edit is finish, just drag this sequence on top of a new sequence with the standard size. Like that you will have NTSC 4x3 with a letter-box of the size they asked.

After an ulcer forming pre-game i was able to output the video with the proper apsect ratio that fit the video board. Your right, it was a matter of making an anamorphic letterbox in 4x3 ratio that was able to be stretched to fit the board, however i achieved this in AE. I WILL on the other hand be testing your method in FCP. It sounds much easier than having to bounce back and forth from program to program. I'll let you know if this works.

No, it was all video cut in FCP 6 that was to accompany another piece already formatted for the video board. I contacted the prod company that delivered the formatted piece and they put me through how they accomplished the resize in AE.
