Changes not reflected in timeline
by artisanal television on Sep 4, 2007 at 6:20:58 pm

Not sure if this has been asked and answered, but couldn't figure out a good search for it. So here goes:

I'm making some very simple cuts to a piece of video in a sequence. I've insert edited a single piece of video into a sequence. I use the razor blade tool to make a cut in it.

In my timeline, there is no change to what I'm seeing. I most definitely clicked the razor, but nothing changes. Now, if I zoom out using command + =, I can see that there is a cut in my footage. Weird.

Now I select the piece of footage in front of this new razor cut with the x key. I shift-x to cut it out. Again, no change on the timeline. If I zoom in, suddenly, the footage is gone. Weird.

When I quit out of FCP and restart, the problem goes away. Problem solved, you say. But why? I say.

I'm an experienced AVID editor, and it makes me nervous when my editing program starts doing things I don't understand in non-repeatable ways.

Any thoughts? Or is the general advice on such things: "Once it stops happening, stop worrying your head about it."?

There is an option in your preferences whether to show what FCP calls a "through edit". A through edit in FCP is similar to an "Add Edit" in Avid. In FCP, you have the option to not show them...in Avid, you use the "Remove Add Edit" command to get rid of them.

You seem to have "Show Through Edits" turned off.

This is not a FCP thing but a problem with FCP on your system (not pointing figures, just want to assure you this in not normal) Sounds like this is a refresh issue, maybe the trashing preference would solve this.

You are right msacci, I should have read his posting more carefully.
This does not sound like 'through edits' being hidden

Thanks for the feedback. Several things have been funky lately. I'm thinking I may go for a clean install and see if it helps. Again, thanks for responding.
