Final Cut is "smooshing" my 720p footage...pls Help
by ericwebb on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:02:45 pm

So, I'm importing quicktime footage into Final Cut Pro 6.

The quicktime footage is 1280*720*30fps. It's the correct aspect ratio from the source, etc, etc. Looks great.

However, when I import the footage into Final Cut my "canvas" frame size ratio is 1280*720, however it is squishing my vertically, creating black bars along the top and bottom.

Looking at my "Sequence Settings", I have Frame Size set to W=1280 H=720 and Aspect Ratio set to "HDTV 720p (16:9)". Pixel aspect ratio is set to "square". These are the settings that are "squishing" my video.

So, I've tried a number of things, and nothing seems to work. I though perhaps it was 16:9-ing my video again giving it the squish look, so I set the "Aspect Ratio" in Sequence Settings to "custom" and the used the same W&H numbers, and click OK. To my suprise, when I open the sequence settings again, it has reverted back to the "HDTV 720p (16:9)" setting. Whoa? I've tried to change this dozens of times, no dice.

Anyone have any suggestions? I guess what I really need is for Final Cut to maintain the aspect ratio and frame size of the original quicktime files.

This has really frustrated me, as nearly everything I've done in Final Cut prior to this has been a blast to work with.
Anyone have any idea what is going on? How to fix? Or have a work around?

Eric,

Are you allowing FCP to set the sequence settings to match your video when you drop it on the timeline? If not, open a new timeline and do it, it doesn't make the same mistakes we humans do...
