Just started using the Sony HVR-1500 deck and have had good success capturing footage from both HDV and DV tapes (using their respective capture settings, naturally) into FCP 6.0 via firewire.

However, I cannot get the same deck to output my DV NTSC or HDV timelines back from Final Cut, either in using View>External Video or Print to Video . Nothing that I do works-- even pressing the iLink button on the front of the deck (like the manual says). I have hooked up a Sony GV-D1000 that has a small built-in monitor and this works as I see and hear my timeline playing. It would seem that the firewire cable and port (at least on the MacPro G5 ) is working but I'm not sure about the HVR-1500. BTW, I have a Matrox MXO system hooked up in this configuration and for monitoring playback. It works great. However, I cannot get the same footage into the deck. I can turn off the MXO by pressing apple-F12 but that just turns off the MXO and places the desktop on the 23" ACD and 14" Sony NTSC screens. So I change my FCP output settings to Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) and still nothing. Note: there's a small monitor screen on the HVR-1500 that does not show anything when I try to use it.

I have confirmed the deck passes video by playing video through it into the Sony NTSC monitor, so the deck is working in that capacity. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

System: Apple MacPro G5, FCP 6, 4 gigs RAM, Matrox MXO for monitoring HDV (also monitor DV).

This drove us nuts too until we found a mention buried in the manual.
In the deck System Menu, go to SETUP MENU > OPERATIONAL FUNCTION >AUTO EE SELECT - now make sure all 4 are set to EE not PB. This makes sure the deck wakes up when the firewire signal from the computer starts.

Thanks for your input!

After posting my request for help, I continued to dig through the manual/deck menus and found the same menus you mentioned and was able to tweak our 1500 into accepting DV from our FCP.

But your post was very helpful nonetheless-- if not only to me, to others experiencing the same issue.

Thanks again!

I am having the opposite problem. I am trying to capture HDV tape into FCP via firewire, but FCP seems to not be recognizing the deck. The computer sees that it is connected to the HVR 1500, but nothing in FCP? I see that you have had success doing this, and hoping you can help me out?

Thanks
