UPS power conditioner and backup
by GaryAlan on Jul 18, 2007 at 2:02:58 am

Any opinions/recommendations for a UPS system with power conditioning for one edit room? Basically we need to run one Mac Pro 8 core, with five internal hard drives, two 23" Cinema displays.

TIA,
Gary

We really like the APC SUA1500 Smart UPS. $550 approx.
(they also make a rack mount version.)
We have four of them in your facility.
OS X has a native driver for it. You don't have to install software.
Just connect the USB cable to your Mac Pro and it tells you when
the power goes out and your percentage left, etc. The unit itself
works like a charm. For what you described, one unit would be fine
but two would give you more time before you have to shut down.

Dan,

Would ypu add the other gear in the room to this unit? Like the audio monitors, HDV VTR, Matro MXO, Wacom tablet, printer. Or just put the computer/monitors on it for a time period to save current work in progeress and then shut down?

That's why we have two units in the suite. We put everything
on the two units. When we have power glitches, which happens
about once a week and lasts a second or two, we just get a notice on the desktop that says
"you are on backup power". We have absolutely no impact on our editing
or monitoring. We only know there was a glitch because the lights
flicked off and on (and the desktop notice).

Gary,

If you don't put at least the main program/system monitor on your UPS, how would you be able to see what your doing in order to to shut down?

You should only put the essentials on the UPS if you only have one, including: CPU, drive array, main program/system monitor. Speakers, mixer, NTSC monitor etc. are all non-essential and can eat up your battery power much faster should your power go out when for instance you're away at lunch.

David,

That is what I meant. Just the computer and monitor. Thanks for the other info as that does make sense. The client just wants a min. setup.

Thanx,
Gary

DRW

Do macs support the UPS Shutting down the computer? or is that only a PC thing?
is there a script that will do it?

just wondering about the "out to lunch" scenario

BTW, when i get up from the chair i save all, and when i go out to lunch, i close FCP... doesnt everyone?

[Bob Flood] "Do macs support the UPS Shutting down the computer? or is that only a PC thing?"

I've never used my UPS that way, but I'm certain there's software for MACs to do this as well.

And, I hardly ever shut down my computers. Certainly never when I go to lunch... If I did that it would show a lack of support for the utility company and they might lower my bill. Heaven forbid...

I go to Costco and pick up whatever unit they have in stock at the moment as they are always around $99. We have three or four APS-1500 Units and three or four Trip Lite units and all work perfectly fine. I also have two Furman Power Conditioners which all VTRs other A/V equipment runs off of.
