Multi-Cam w/Different Video Formats
by Benjamin Brodbeck on Jul 16, 2007 at 12:29:30 pm

Hi,

I'm doing a 4-Camera shoot that I intend to do a multi-cam edit on in FCP 6 w/a Quad Mac Pro.

2 Cameras will shoot at HDV 720/24p
2 Cameras will shoot at DV NTSC 30

Audio will be captured from the HDV 720/24p source.

My main concern is getting the DV & HDV footage to not have audio sync problems.
I'd like all the footage/audio to sync up in the MultiClip.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'd think if you want the cameras to look anywhere near the same and show no syncing problems in a multiclip, you should shoot the same frame rate. I really don't think that 24fps and 30fps material will look much the same at all, and certainly won't look the same if you shoot SD and HD mixed up...

Audio should not be a problem. Regardless of the frame rate, one second of footage is still one second of time.

It's none of our business but we can easily infer from your question that you and your producers or clients have made all kinds of really weird

Thanks for the input. The HDV cameras could shoot standard def like the other two DV cameras. I'll go that route.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks,

You will definetly have to shoot in the same codec for Multicam to work. Even with the new Open timeline Multicam doesn't support different formats. Even IMX 50 and 30 will not mix for me. Has to be the same DV, HDV and DV will not be able to cut together in Multicam.
