Re: OT - The iPhone, does it work? by msacci on Jun 30, 2007 at 8:13:38 pm
I got one - just went to see how long the line was in Nashville and it was moving so fast I said why not? Took a total of 15 minutes to get in line and walk out with the phone.
Well I have fixed feelings about it. I never had email on my phone and that is the main reason for getting it. That seems to be working really well, I cannot believe there is no bcc - I would like to send a bcc to an account set up just for sent iPhone emails without anyone getting a hold of it. (reply all kind of problem)
The biggest disappoint is the Map directions but that is because I use Verizon's navigation which is almost as good as a true GPS. And I use this thing all the time - cost me an extra $10 a month.
the Edge network is really slow for surfing. Bluetooth works great. I thought it had iChat built in but it doesn't, my misunderstanding. The text program looks like iChat the messages staying in one file and in bubbles.
It was easy to set up and I transfered my Verizon number and that will take 24hrs to switch over - you have full use of the iPhone and all the features while I wait, other than being able to receive calls.
The manual is over a hundred pages so I still need to figure somethings out.
The image is great, I don't have the best eye and I can read text even when very small, totally blown away by this. You get the hang of typing very quickly. In an hour I was doing okay. Has a spell-corrector feature that works most of the time.
So my main complaint is with the driving directions not being a turn by turn voice thing, "prepare to turn right in .1 mile" but I suspect that what it has will be an upgrade to most people.
Email on the road is going to be nice. Overall I'm very happy with it. Hopefully the improvement will be software and we can upgrade the phone like we do the computers

[msacci]"the Edge network is really slow for surfing."
That's the big thing all the technology reporters were discussing so I was wondering if it was as slow as they said. I've read that Verizon and another network have much faster internet speeds and there was a feeling that Apple will be hurt by tying themselves so closely to AT&T, which has the slowest network available today.
Good to hear from someone who actually has their hands on it though. Glad it's working for you so far!

I found that here in the Atl the edge network was just fine for surfing. With such a little screen, surfing is really just limited to necessity for the most part. I'd say it's similar to 4 or 5 times modem speeds. Not great, but once you've downloaded the interface for a site like the cow, the rest is generally additional text or a picture or two. It wasn't like you had to wait minutes for a page. More like 10-30 seconds depending on the content.
But no flash, and I've yet to get any of the quicktimes on any of my own websites to play. I'm not sure if they're disabled for edge or what. I'll try them on wifi later.

yes you do it is a pref in the settings.
Same story here, walked in after dinner on friday about 10:30 pm took longer to park in downtown chicago than it did to buy the phone.
I agree that surfing on EDGE is painfully slow, but the phone is one of the best wifi finders I have ever seen, stopped at a light I could see 10 wireless routers from my car, even tells you if they are locked.
I was able to set up and transfer my cingular account in about 5 min on Sat am.
first acc i got was a ruggedized case for mine.

I was recently called by Apple to answer a survey on the FCP Studio 2 upgrade.
There was one interesting question regarding interest in future online FCP support for clients being able to do rough cuts and other project review capabilities.
I gotta wonder if the iPhone might have some sort of FCP funtion in it's future.

That's a feature of Final Cut Server.

very good review indeed, very balanced. I would agree with 99% of what he writes. I disagree with his reason why the back space button is placed poorly, I keep hitting it by mistake.

A newspaper report this morning notes that AT&T "juiced up" the EDGE network on Friday just before the launch. So I guess they're trying to answer the critics about the slower connection. That's a good sign.

Here's a better review because it actually talks about THE PHONE.
It so strange that all over the web, all the blogs, all the forums,
nobody is talking about the quality (or lack there of) of the phone itself.
Apparently it's not so good, and this is my main reason to wait until
version 2. The rest of it seems pretty neat.
Re: Who knows? by Danrnw on Jul 2, 2007 at 4:18:00 am
Probably has a lot to do with where you are, as much as the phone itself.
In Seattle, ATT service is spotty. You drive around town and you lose calls.
You also get weird digital sounds, like multipath but worse. Bad quality audio.
That's why I switched to Verizon, which has been the best service I've
ever had, since owning my first cell phone in 1991.
It's just a shame Apple had to do an exclusive deal with one carrier.
Why not make great phones that can run on any carrier?
One for GSM and one for CDMA?

Ok, so you spend between $500 - $600 to get one and then you immediately break it apart? Sounds insane to me, but I guess when you have nothing better to do.......

Absolutelyl love it so far, though activation was a nightmare - waited 36 hours and spent 10 hours on phone with customer service to get it activated. I ported my number fron Verizon - but I know of others who had no problems porting their numbers - just unlucky I guess.
I don't think I would have been as frustrated with the activation process if they would only let you use all the other features besides the phone - but totally locked until AT&T activates it, so no iPod or anything until they send an activation email.
The feature I'd like to see added the most is Flash Video in Safari.

Sounds like folks porting their numbers over from another service did have the most problems. I guess no matter how much you plan for a major product rollout, you're still going to have problems with a launch of that size.
I have to say I'm impressed overall though as the launch went incredibly smooth considering how many people purchased / activated their phones at once.

Re: No Flash by Jeff Carpenter on Jul 2, 2007 at 10:50:55 am
No flash. It's considered a security risk. The official word is that there are no plans to allow it because of this. I'm sure this will change someday, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.
