BetaSP capture codecs: i c no diff
by mortimer heathcliff on May 11, 2007 at 4:48:56 pm

i usually capture in DV-NTSC, but thought i would try a little test...and i see no difference on the screen between capturing in DV, DVCPro50, and 8-bit. am i missing something, or should i be fine to carry on saving disc space and overall better FCP performance?

Anything you add to a DV timeline wouldn't look as good as DVCPRO50 or Uncompressed video (10 bit especially)... the DV won't look better, but graphics and any other non video tape source material should look better.

It takes a trained eye to see the difference. But I'd at least capture in DV50 for finishing from Beta. You might not be able to point to the difference, but there is a difference and for me, it's definately worth doing.

Difference is, as you've found, subtle at best, and if you don't have a pristine source on BetaSP, you're not going to see any benefit.

Jerry's comments about rendering are very valid. You obviously want to avoid rendering graphics down to too low a format, but it all really depends on what format you're mastering back to!
