file backups - Sharpie on DVD's a no no?
by mortimer heathcliff on Feb 12, 2007 at 5:05:20 pm

not exactly an FCP question, but it relates. a friend told me that ALL of his old archived CDs and DVDs were "bad" because he had labeled them with a Sharpie. i didn't believe him, came home, and put a few oldies in my Mac, and sure enough, the file/folder and filename structure was intact, but nothing would open.

could it be the dreaded Sharpie?

I've been doing this for years. Never had a problem... yet. Don't scare me!

I just unarchived an 18 month old project from three DVD's, all labeled with Sharpies.

I didn't have any problems.

I think it might be coincidence.

A couple years ago they came out with a study that said Sharpie type markers could eat away @ the plastics on media disc. There was a slew of new markers introduced that were for writing on disc. I have discs that are several years old with sharpie writing on them and no probs. So,..

Sharpie makes CD/DVD safe markers, so why not just get one to be safe?

alrighty...well, glad to hear no one is having this problem. it could be the way i had "saved" these files in the first place, probably with Roxio on my PC. i'm just bewildered that the files and folders are all there, but the files won't open. some are images, some are other documents.
