Editing/Digitizing 24p and 30p shot on Sony HVR-V1U
by KMimsey on Jan 20, 2007 at 5:46:28 pm

Hi All,

A few questions here. I'm pretty familiar with FCP, and I have the latest version. I just bought the new Sony HVR-V1U that shoots true 24p, 30p and 60i. I'm working on a project in Nassau (Bahamas), and we are going to have interviews as well as a lot of motion shots. So...

1)I want to shoot 24p AND 30p. Motion/action in 30p, everything else in 24p. Trying to avoid the 24p motion judders.

2)How do I capture 30p in FCP, and edit both on the same timeline? Do I need to have the camera set to 30p, as well as the correct FCP settings?

3)What kind of experiences has everyone had with mixing the two formats? Any suggestions? Would I be better to shoot 24p and 60i?

Thanks.

This is a response a friend of mine had via email:

"Are you talking about 30p in a 24p timeline? Check on that before you commit to it, you could run into problems. From what I read on the forums true 24p is for dumping back to film. Any other format like internet & video should be edited in a 30 frame world with a pull-down on your progressive material. Probably best to ask the experts & go to creativecow.net. Those guys have their head screwed & it's a good mix of film & video people. Try to stay from the film only forums for these kind of things. Film guys can sometimes be too narrow minded & not always practical. You may possibly need to stay 24p or 60i with a pull-down may be better suited. When asking these questions you want an objective audience. Creativecow has that. Don't know anything about HD yet. We'll still be in SD world for a little while longer. I prefer 30p for all B-Roll."

What do you guys think? Should I go for 30p and 60i? 60i being for the major action and motion?

How do I set things up in FCP so I digitize and edit this properly for a internet and DVD output?

Don't mix frame rates. You cannot make a timeline that supports both. You will have to set if for one frame rate, and if you drop footage of another frame rate, it will need to be rendered. If you set it for 24P (23.98) then your 30P footage will render out and end up having the same cadence as the 24P footage...so the whole reason you shot 30p (for the smooth motion) would be for naught.

If you film 24P at 29.97, and 30p at 29.97, then you can make a 29.97 timeline and both will edit together fine. Just make sure you don't shoot TRUE 24 Progressive, and you will be fine.

Don't do it. You need to pick one. Otherwise you will have a very difficult time in post. You'll have to convert one framerate to another. And because of this, you'll lose the ability to edit native HDV. HDV is far too lossy to convert back to. So you'll have to convert everything to DVCProHD, JPEG, or ideally Uncompressed.

Or just don't use FCP. It blows when it comes to mixing formats - especially mixed framerates. Basically, it can't do it. Even if you're content to render half the footage in the timeline, it doesn't turn out well. For example, it won't even add 3:2 pulldown if you render 23.98 footage on a 29.97 timeline. It is the one and only terrible, terrible shortcoming of FCP. Other NLEs can mix formats. The new Media 100 even looks like a viable option.

Okay, I think I'm a bit confused now. How do I film 24p at 29.97? Would that be the 24pA format on my camera? And if I film it at 29.97, how does that make it different from 30p?

24p material is laid to your tape at 29.97- the NLE is removing the redundant frames that the camera added so that it would play out.

I shot some test footage today, and I'm thinking I'll go with 30p.

Can someone tell me how to capture it properly and set things up so that I DON'T have to render every clip on the timeline? When I tried to capture today, the clip had to render, and it looked fuzzy and pixelated.

Look in the Easy Setups. Choose the setting that matches the settings that you shot.

Then, trash Sequence 1. That has the OLD settings. Create a new sequence and you should be good to go.

There is a setting for HDV 720p30.

When I use easy setup, and select the HDV720p30, it gives me an error saying it can't find my camera (or device). It then captures fine once I log and capture, but it still needs to render on the timeline (which it shouldn't, correct?).

It also still looks pixelated. Would this have anything to do with the fact that I don't have an HD monitor? That's the only thing I can grasp at.

It shouldn't. But I must confess that I haven't worked with HDV...but it should work. Which camera?

Correct:

Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback

ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.

1. Disable overlays on the canvas
2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787

Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

For viewing HDV on the cheap, yet at Broadcast quality, you can use the MATROX MXO and Apple 23" Cinema Display. $2000 for both.

The cause of your problem is simple. That is not a 720p camera. It is 1080. Use the correct HDV 1080 Easy Setup.

All Sony HDV products are 1080. JVC and Canon use 720.

Right, but there isn't an Easy Setup setting for HDV 1080p30.

I have FCP 5.1.2. It has multiple 1080 HDV setups. Make sure you have the "Show All" box checked.
