convert uncompressed 10bit Quicktime file to DV codec (after telecine)
by Khashyar Darvich on Dec 20, 2006 at 6:13:42 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am having about 6.5 hours of old 8mm film transfered to probably uncompressed 10bit Quicktime files (using a Cintel rank telecine at Cinepost in Georgia).

The project that the 8mm footage will be used for will have a dvcam sequence format. (I am saving the film to 10 bit uncompressed in case I want to use it in the future in an uncompressed sequence).

My question is is it easy to convert the 10 bit uncompressed Quicktime files to dv codec Quicktime files?

I know that I could import the uncompressed files into the DV sequence and then render them, but I would rather convert the 10bit files to DV and import and use the DV version of those files.

Would I simply do this through creating a separate 10bit sequence in FCP, and then export the sequence as a DVcam Quicktime file?

I am working with a Quad-core Mac (with 4 GB RAM) and FCP 5.2, so I am assuming that my computer can handle the uncompressed files.

I am also worried about the 4th flame jitter that I have read sometimes occurs with telecines... Any advice as to what I should tell the telecinist at Cinepost to eliminate the potential frame jitter?

Thank for your input about the best conversion method.

Khashyar

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have the option of have the telecine captured using an uncompressed 10-bit format, or a dv codec.

I haven't converted a 10bit Quicktime file to a DV Quicktime file, so I would like to make sure that FCP can easily convert 10bit before I give the go-ahead for the uncompressed telecine.

Thanks for your feedback,

Khashyar

Go ahead and do it. You can simply use QT conversion or Compressor to convert each file to DV.

Thank you very much, David.

I have always either worked in an all DV sequence, or an all SDI sequence, and never converted one to the other.

Thanks again,

Khashyar
