Final Cut Pro 5.1.1, Panasonic Varicam, Panasonic 1200A deck and Audio Sync Issues

i have dvcpro hd footage from the varicam and am loading it via firewire into my fcp 5.1.1 system. when listening to the deck during capture everything is in sync. when playing back on my 23" apple display, all audio is 9 frames later than picture. for now, i am sliding the audio forward 9 frames, but i'd rather fix it on capture. any thoughts?

How are you monitoring audio? Firewire introduces a 5-8 frame delay relative to the audio coming out of the computer. In other words, if you're monitoring "built in" audio from the computer, it will be 7 frames off from the picture going out to the NTSC monitor from the deck. The only way around this is to use a capture card like the AJA or Blackmagic. Firewire will always cause a delay.
However.... the actual files ARE in sync. Check the waveforms against a slate.

God I hate being contrary, or the exception, but when I playback the footage on my canvas and have my mixer connected via the Built In audio port, there is no delay...0 frames. If my mixer is connected via firewire, 0 frame delay. if I monitor on my HD monitor thru my decklink HD card...0 frame delay.

It's not the firewire audio (your mixer) that causes the delay, it's an external firewire VIDEO box like the AJA i/o that is the culprit. Your Decklink card is internal, so it's on the fast bus, hence no delay.

thanks for all the input. i am monitoring the audio and video on my 23" apple display. the deck is not even connected when i'm watching the playback of my captured clips. so, how could the firewire be the issue? unless, the delay is happening upon capture?

wayne, i do know what the frame offset is for and i have already tried that. i have tried adjusting the audio/video settings >device control>playback offset, audio/video settings >device control>capture offset, and system settings >playback control>frame offset. so far none of this is working.

Well, in that case, everything is working fine. You'll never get the Apple monitor to match your deck audio or the computer audio as long as you are using firewire. The best case solution for you is to monitor your video and audio from the deck OR get yourself a capture card that fits your needs.

Ahhh...Thanks Mark. I will admit that I don't know technical reason as to why things work certain ways, just that they work or don't work. My mind is too much focused on the story to dig into the why.
