Offline Format (recompress) for HD Editing FCP 5.1

I'm editing an HD project in FCP 5.1 (720p 23.98). I'm wondering if there's a way to "re-compress" my master clips via Media Manager to a more "off-line" friendly format. I've run some tests using Offline RT HD and DV NTSC anamorphic and while FCP does convert the clips, the Time code is not the same as the original HD clips (seems to be off by several frames). Needless to say, this is very unsettling.
Anyone have experience w/ off-line workflow of HD projects?

No need really to make that offline. DVCPRO HD is a very easy to edit format that doesn't take up all that much space. 22MB/hour...about double what DV takes. I have 70 hours worth on two 500GB G-Raids and an internal SATA drive. and you can build a SATA Raid pretty cheaply.
