Final Cut Pro market share?
by Overstim on Mar 1, 2006 at 4:50:29 am

I've been asked to justify the inclusion of Final Cut in the curriculum of a pretty large university. I've been using FCP recreationally since 1.0, and professionally for about 4 years. So I have a pretty good feel for what markets FCP is big in, which markets not so much yet, and why. But I dont have any hard numbers.

Does anyone out there have some statistics or numbers on the growth/penetration of Final Cut in various industries, like film, broadcast, straight-to-video, etc? Thanks a lot.

I don't see how we can get you numbers...I don't know of anyone who does a poll or researches this.

Just know that Avid is very entrenched in Hollywood and New York and Chicago...all the major markets. And that FCP is gaining notoriety. I can name 5 major post facilities that are TOTALLY FCP, and know of several TV shows that use FCP, and several production companies. It is huge...that you need to know.

So it should be taught in schools, as should Avid. Both.

Hi
From the UK here's a link to a report of a BBC initiative to sell an integrated shared-media FCP workflow to broadcasters worldwide:

You could compare the demand at other universities.

I teach Final Cut Pro part-time at the The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. We have 7 sections of 15 to 17 students in the fall semesters for Non-Linear Computer Editing 2: Advanced Final Cut Pro (MPT_231). Basic Final Cut Pro editing is taught in an introductory course to non-linear editing. We have 4 sections of Nonlinear Computer Editing 3: Avid DV Xpress (MPT_350) and 1 section of Nonlinear Computer Editing 4: Avid Composer Adrenaline (MPT_355).

You can find this information at http://www.academyart.edu/curriculum/course_catalog.asp. Select Fall 2006 and the Motion Pictures & Television department.

You could check other universities that might have online catalogues like perhaps UCLA -- http://www.filmtv.ucla.edu/dof.cfm.

i learned on a steebeck, and i truly think that that taught me the basics, like no other way. i graduated from the vancouver film school about 4 1/2 years ago, and the lessons i learned on that beast will never leave me.

i also at the time learned avid media composer, but since school i have mainly used sony vegas video and fcp (mostly fcp at this point)

the programs are all pretty much the same, its just where goes what. editing is an idea and a mindset, not software.

Since this post is going to other FC forums, do us all a huge favor and return to them with a synopsis of your findings.

I'm with Bryce. You should be only concerned with teaching how to edit. The platform is irrelevant unless your school requires marketing snobbery positioning in which case Avid is your only choice for recruiting newbies to the field experienced editors will adapt to any platform.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

TrendWatch.com has a more general analysis of Apple's penetration into the film/video market than the Avid vs Final Cut Pro you are asking about, but I thought I would give you a heads-up. TrendWatch.com stopped their Fast Fact newsletters in May of 2005 so you will have to extrapolate some of their archives at TrendWatch Visual Effects/Dynamic Media Fast Facts Archive. Search the page using Apple and Mac terms.

They are very knowledgeable in the film and broadcast industry and I'm sure they would do a survey for you for a small fee... ;)
