When I try to import this damn Quicktime HDV file FCP tells me that it doesn't recognise the file type.

My A/V settings are:

Seq preset: HDV - 1080i60
Capture preset HDV - Apple Intermediate Codec
Video Playback Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 29.97 - 8 bit (1920 x 1080)

When I captured the material it was visible in the capture window amd looked perfectly normal.

I just can't seem to get it to make a sequence - FCP gives me this nasty little message about "unknown file type"

Any ideas from the boffins out there while I tear my hair out and contemplate entering a monastery.

All the best,

Harry

We need a little more infromation to help you. What version of Quicktime, OS, FCP? Was this file given to you are you trying to digitize it? What type of deck? Did you use an easy setup?

I am using FCP 5.0.4. Mac OSX.4.4 Dual 2 gig G5 with 2 gigs Ram and the latest Quicktime that software update gave me.

I have already digitised the file via firewire from the Canon XL H1. I was able to see the image during capture on the capture screen. I captured it twice. The file is about 7.2 megs and I'm guessing that the shot lasts about one minute. So I'm assuming that I did manage to actually get it into the computer.

I did use an easy setup, but I think I had to adapt it to use Apple Intermediaye Codec for HDV, which I thought we were supposed to do, no?

Perhaps I should not be using Apple Internediate codec to digitise? Maybe I should use the other HDV one?

I'll try that.

But please let me know any further thoughts, and my thanks for your prompt response to my post.

Best

Harry

OK, so I just captured with the plain "HDV" capture setting. I assume that's what is meant by "native"?

Now I am able to drag the QT file into the timeline, but I get a red render bar, and FCP apparently doesn't want to render it when I tell it to.

Wierd, huh. Or me being stupid is more likely.

By the way, I can hear the sound just fine.

Help!

Harry

Check your clip settings, then create a NEW sequence with the exact same settings and you should be able to drag it right to the timeline without the need to render.

Right. You don't want to use the Apple Intermediate Codec unless you're using iMovie or FCE. Once you get your Sequence settings correctly set with a new sequence, you should be cool.

ok Guys.

In my A/V settings I have:

Summary:

Sequence preset: HDV - 1080i60
Capture preset: HDV
Video Playback:
Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 29.97Hz - 8 bit (1920x1080)

Sequence presets:

HDV - 1080i60

Capture presets:

HDV

Video playback:

Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 29.97Hz - 8 bit (1920x1080)

Can either of you spot a mistake here?

Best,

in increasing desperation,

Harry

[Harry] "Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 29.97Hz - 8 bit (1920x1080)"

Isn't HDV 1440x1080?

I don't know. There's nothing in the Blackmagic menu to give me 1440x1080.

Does anyone else know?

Click on the timeline, Go up to: Sequence>settings>aspect ratio drop down menu, change to HD (1440x1080) 16x9

Thanks for that tip about the 1440. I've now done that.

And I made a new "easy setup" and also, as per Blackmagic instruction manual, changed the Video Desktop to "Disabled after restart" which was supposed to give me video preview in the capture window - it doesn't.

I've also trashed prefs, brushed my teeth etc etc.

I have also made a New Sequence, but then FCP throws up this message when I double click on that new sequence or try to open it: "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card"

Whadda ya make of that, Mr Fung?

I've emailed Blackmagic, so we'll see what they have to say. But I still think it's fundamentally an FCP issue.

So I'll be back.

And many many thanks for all of your assistance to everyone. I am now off suicide watch after knowing that there are people out there who give enough of a damn to help their fellow man.

Any more ideas are welcom. I'll be here till the end of time.

Best wishes,

Harry.

[Harry] " There's nothing in the Blackmagic menu to give me 1440x1080."

the video out is 1920x1080 only the bits on tape are 1440 x1080.

my guess it that if you change your easy set up to HDV1080 and CREATE a new SEQ and drag the content into it-- then you should be fine.

my guess is you did not have the set up correctly when you created the seq.

Yes, I did.

I'm wondering if I should go through the whole prefs trashing thing.

Thanks for the reply

Harry
