iMac G5 and cluster of minis?
by c1sc0systems on Oct 13, 2005 at 8:27:13 am

Hi,

My background is bioinformatics, and as such I'm quite used to use (AMD-based) clusters for heavy processing tasks.

I'm dabbling with video in iMovie / FCE and want to step up and learn FCE. I'm mostly doing DV and I was wondering if the iMac G5 is up to the task as an editing workstation for FCP5.

Currently I'm working on a Powerbook and I notice that whenever I'm rendering for DVD the computer totally locks up, becoming unusable for a couple of hours.

I'm wondering if an additional mini (next to my current PB or soon-to-be iMac) will be useful to distribute the rendering tasks with Qmaster?

Basically, I want to be able to offload the final rendering to (a) different machine(s) so at least I can still continue working.

Any suggestions for setting something like this up at affordable prices would be welcome.

Cheers - Francis

If you buy another Mac you can simply work on IT while the other Mac burns an iDVD (yes, its a very slow process).

But, you don't need any other programs to "distribute tasks" for this process, just do your additional work on the second Mac while the first one chugs away.
