FCP Scratch Disk: Partitions?
by raju (Raju) on Aug 27, 2005 at 12:11:45 am

I just bought a G-tech G-Drive 250 GB FW800 firewire drive.
I want to know if it is advised to partition the drive and why people do it.

I will be storing several FCP projects on there as well as storing a clone of the computer's internal hard disk and as the Scratch Disk for my current project.

Do I need to partition? I've never partitioned my other drives and they all seem to work fine.
Thoughts?

A G-RAID? No need to partition. You could if you wanted, just to have the OS you install on there separate from the Capture Scratch, but you gain nothing nor lose anything...

actually, i don't have a "G-raid", i have the regular "g-drive." But even then there is no point in partitioning, right? I'm NOT using it as a secondary startup disk. Rather, I am using it just as storage, Scratch Disk for FCP editing, and clone image of laptop drive. I can put these all in separate folders and organize/manage it without partitioning.

Valuable hard drive space is taken up by any partitioning you do, just like the differences between an unformatted and a formatted drive. It doesn't sound like partitioning is needed in your case.

Don't partition and also don't overmanage your drive either. For all FCP related materials, allow FCP to manage this. Do not create a folder for every project or every capture scratch, etc.... the more you micro manage the drive, the more likely it is to drop frames.

Also, storing a clone of your main system drive on there will not allow you to erase the drive from the time to time. The only way to ensure fast performance off your media drives is to erase them as often as possible.

wow! I had no idea that one must erase the media drive often. Is this because of continual fragmentation caused by using it as the drive to edit on? For a drive just used as a storage device or backup for a clone, then would you still want to erase it from time to time, or probably not?

How often is it advisable to erase the media drive?

I also heard that if you fill a drive it performs slower, so it's better to leave alot of empty room. I have a 250 gig drive and I would say i've filled it to about half capacity.
