Audio out of sync when I output to tape
by Heath Brinkley on May 24, 2005 at 7:03:32 pm

When I output my timeline to tape the audio is out of sync but it is in perfect sync when it plays on the timeline. Am I missing a Setting? I am running Final Cut 3 on OS X.

Let me guess...you're using FireWire drives, no?

How are your speakers and video monitor set up? Are they setup the way it shows in the manual on page 55?

One of the biggest causes of synch issues is that people don't monitor properly. Both your video monitor & speakers should be connected to your DV deck the whole time that you're editing, from the time you start logging & capturing until you lay off to tape. If you don't monitor you sound & picture that way continually, you're going to run into lots of problems related to synch & quality that you could have fixed easily (or even avoided) at an earlier stage.

I'm willing to bet that you had your speakers connected to the computer while you were monitoring picture on a video monitor (or that you had the speakers connected to the deck, but no video monitor), so your sound was out of synch the whole time, without you're even knowing it. Volume 1 of the manual has instructions for connecting your video monitor & speakers properly.

OTOH, if you sound is slipping out of synch (as opposed to being out of synch by a constant amount), that's a whole 'nother can of horse poo. Most likely, that problem is caused by by your drives being too slow or too full, by virus protection software running in the background (anti-virus software causes many bad juju on video editing systems), or can possibly be fixed by mixing down your audio. In the Sequence menu, look for Render>Audio Mixdown, & see if that fixes it.

[Gunner Jones] "Oh man Arnie! You got it nailed. It's gotta be one of these things."

Unless, of course, it's something else! ;-)
