Audio/Video sync problem defies standard troubleshooting
by rosindabow on Apr 27, 2005 at 7:46:30 pm

I am running FCPHD on a dual processor 2.5 GHz G5 with a 23" Apple Display. I am using an Aurora Igniter X to spit out video to an external monitor. I captured some footage off of a Canon DV camera and all the clips play back perfectly, every time. I captured the audio at 48K, stereo and I believe I was running 29.97 non-drop. Every thing plays back in synch until placed in the timeline. That's when the trouble begins. I get drifting when playing back on the timeline. It is very inconsistent: the longer the clip, the longer the drift. If I stop playback when it is out of synch and then re-start it at the exact same moment it will be back in synch until it drifts apart again. I am only working on a short 3 minute piece so I don't suspect that I'm overtaxing the CPU. I am running the stock video card that came in the G5. OS X V 10.3.9 QuickTime Pro V 6.5.2 The material is on an external LaCie firewire hard drive. I have sat here for hours reading and re-reading with no luck. .. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You might want to check with Aurora Video Systems. You may have a setting in the Igniter settings that is causing a shift in audio.

I saw this behavior years ago with Igniter in OS9 with old drivers and SCSI drives, and I had to slow down the SCSI card, but I don't think that's your issue.

Perhaps you should check that you have the latest drives from Aurora also. There's an Aurora forum here at the Cow that might have an answer.

Thanks. I just posted something on the Aurora forum. This really troubles me. Igniter does not Spit out DV files to my monitor, and as everything seems to be moving in that direction, this causes me concern. Aurora hasn't updated ther drivers since October of 2004, which in this world is a long time. It seems to me that I have continually had lots of driver issues with these cards. I know that Canopus does what Aurora doesn't for a lot less money. Maybe it's time to jump?
Sorry for the digression, but trouble-shooting makes my brain hurt.
