I have a project that was shot on an HVX-170 and ingested at 1080i/29.97 – I found I can run it through Cinema Tools and reverse telecine the footage to be 1080p/23.98.

Unfortunately, I've already started cutting a project with the 30FPS footage but now I'd like to finish the project at 24FPS so is it as simple as relinking all the footage to the converted 24FPS? This has to cause problems. Has anyone does this before? Any suggestions on how to attack it?

I think the question becomes why would you want to do this?

I'm delivering for web so I can't have interlaced footage, I have a few shots that require integrated graphics which I'd prefer to work with in 24p rather than 30i, and 24p is the standard framerate for every project I cut so I would like to have this project adhere to the same specs as everything else for organizational purposes and also if I would like to integrate it into a reel of my other work.

YOu cannot relink if the footage has a different frame rate. You'll have to re-edit.

I'd finish the piece for the web just the way it is. Deinterlace it for the web in the end during compression.

I see no organizational advantages to changing the frame rate which will degrade the video.

[Jerry Hofmann] "I see no organizational advantages to changing the frame rate which will degrade the video. "

Just removing advanced pulldown, no? Shouldn't degrade the video. If anything, it keeps him from doing a deinterlace pass, which degrades the video quite a bit. Plus he can have the same quality on the web with 20 percent less data rate. Can't think why you wouldn't want to do it.

Shane may very well be right. But there are some reverse telecine tools and remove advanced pulldown tools in the tools menu right in FCP 7. I'd look into those. I never really figured those out.

He shot 29.97. Not 24p.

Since reverse telecine means to remove pulldown I thought he shot 24pa 1080i, which would have pulldown added.

We shot 1080i/24p not 24PA. It's a little confusing but 1080i/24P ingests into Final Cut at 1080i 29.97 and 1080i/24PA ingests into Final cut at 1080P 23.98. From what I can tell though, it looks like running a reverse telecine on footage shot at 1080i/24P will give you the same result as if you shot 1080i/24PA – it will result in progressive, non-interlaced footage running at 23.98fps.

I think you're right about de-interlacing degrading the footage whereas reverse telecine won't.

24p can have it's pulldown removed through cinema tools... uses a 3:2:3:2 pattern instead of a 2:3:3:2 pattern that PA uses. That's why the pulldown can be removed during ingest if it's PA. Easier for the computer to do in the first place.

However removing it will not make it look any different. Just make the file sizes smaller.

As a side note, if the camera can shoot 24PN, you've the best of it there. PN is actually 24 unique frames per second. The other two add fields and spread the 24 unique video frames over 29.97 fps.
