by on Dec 28, 2010 at 8:18:22 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm currently trying to convert my HD .mts files to .mov so I can edit them in Final Cut Pro. I've found different tools to make this possible, but neither of them seem to work on Mac OS x 10.4.11 (tiger)

When I open the application it says: "you cannot open the application because it is not supported on this system."

I've tried:

- Wondershare Video Convverter
- MTS converter for mac
- Aimer video converter
- Iskysoft video conveter

All without success. Somebody knows a (freeware) tool which works on tiger?

Don't know off the top of my head compatibility, but check out ClipWrap (a lot better than the Aimer crap). You can transcode 1 minute free.

Good luck

C.R.

Thanks for your reply. I've converted a file using Clipwrap, but if I try to open the converted .mov the video looks all grey and then Quicktime crashes. When I import it in final cut and do a playback, FCP crashes as well. No idea what's wrong with the file. Any other options?

Hi jan,
You should already have this wonderful free tool:

http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

Probably you will need some of the last QT version together.

The tool doesn't seem to support .mts files :( My quicktime is up to date.

Thnx anyway I'm sure it will come to hand on future projects.

Jan,

You haven't specified what camera the .mts files came from so my recommendation may or may not work for you.

I had a similar issues last year and I was able to convert using mpeg stream clip as was mentioned before. The catch is you need to have a Quicktime component installed that will be able to decode the mts file. Check out Perian. If you install Perian, Mpegstream clip should read your .mts files just fine.

Ah yes the material comes from a canon legria HFM31.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a try as soon as I'm at home.

That's good news. The footage that I converted was also from a Canon camera. I think you should be good to go.

No, too bad, still after installing Perian it says: unrecognized file size. But if I click 'open anyway' and then try to export it to quictime it says: Error: can't read the frame size.

Really pulling my hair out on this one. Discovered that it's possible to insert .mts in final cut pro if you save the whole folder straight from the camera including all other folders, by using Log and Transfer . The thing is that I don't have the whole folder with all the contents anymore.

Thinking about buying the tool wonder share video converter. Currently doing a tryout which add a watermark. But ofcourse I prefer a free solution because I'm working on volenteer projects.

Any other options?

Jan,

hmm... Just out of curiosity are you able to play the .mts file in Quicktime after you've installed Perian? How about in VLC?

Not in QT. It works in VLC but quite shaky and slow...

Jeffrey, the point is not just to get QT files (.mov) from the .mt's.
You need those QT files being supported on FC.
No one of the files/formats out of "mtsconverter", are supported by FC .

Final Cut Pro supports 3GP, AVI, MP4, MXF, QuickTime, AVCHD, DV, DVCPRO HD, H.264, HDV, Motion JPEG, MPEG IMX format, so i think you can convert files from mts to some other format like mp4, avi, etc.

see: http://www.ilikemall.com/how-to/convert-mts-to-mp4-mac.html

It works fine for me.

[Jan van Dommelen] "Thinking about buying the tool wonder share video converte"
From this application, you can't get nothing that works on FC.
Buy ClipWrap and convert your .mts to Prores.

I now see that the OP had that one in his list.

Your right Rafael, its all about the codec. That software didn't indicate what codecs it transcoded to. I assumed it would use whatever codecs that are installed. Like I said shot in the dark.

Hi Jeffrey,
The problem is that most of those converters are aimed for consumers and export delivery formats/codecs.
Nothing that you should bring to any FC time-line.
Happy New year for all of you!!
Best,
rafael

I bought a program called VoltaicHD to convert the .MTS files to .mov and it works! Can view the files in QT and import them in FCP without problems.
