| Dreamcolor Calibration
• | | | |
Hi guys.
I've had a DreamColor and HDP2 set up for a couple of months now and they work very well. However I just received my HP DreamColor Calibration Kit. Having upgraded my monitor's firmware from a PC via USB without a hitch, the calibration software constantly says I have to connect a USB cable from my computer to my monitor. I've tried different cables and different computers (PC and Mac) but no dice. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Bjarki

There's a USB service port under the monitor next to the power switch. Use that.
Jeremy
| | | | |
• | | | |
I did. It's all set up correctly. I'm thinking it's a monitor defect.
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by Jeremy Garchow on Jun 4, 2010 at 2:05:03 pm |
So you have a USB cable from the service port back to your computer, the calibrator coming out of the USB hub on the right side of the monitor and dvi to your computer?
Also I should mention, that splash screen comes up no matter what. When you start the calibration process and the software allows you to select the Dreamcolor (instead of just a generic LCD monitor) then you're all good.
| | | | |

[Bjarki Gudjonsson] "Correct."
Did you read the second part? Here it is again:
"Also I should mention, that splash screen comes up no matter what. When you start the calibration process and the software allows you to select the Dreamcolor (instead of just a generic LCD monitor) then you're all good."
| | | | |
• | | | |
Sorry. That comes up. But after I select the DreamColor in the APS, it tells me to connect the USB which is already connected.

[Bjarki Gudjonsson] "it tells me to connect the USB which is already connected."
And it doesn't let you go further?
| | | | |
• | | | |
No, it always claims the USB is not connected.

What version of the software are you running? Make sure to download the latest from XRite as it's Snow Leopard compatible, it's v1.1.

Yes, that's the one I'm using. Pretty frustrating. I've been googling the issue and can't seem to find anyone else having this issue. I'm guessing it's the monitor.
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by Jeremy Garchow on Jun 7, 2010 at 2:59:59 pm |
Again, I'll ask, when you first start the software, do you get the option to calibrate the DreamColor or just a generic LCD?
| | | | |
• | | | |
Hi - I answered that a little earlier:
"Sorry. That comes up. But after I select the DreamColor in the APS, it tells me to connect the USB which is already connected."
The APS recognizes the DreamColor for what it is - it doesn't require any other monitor to be connected via USB.
Thanks again!

Hey guys,
Don't know if this thread is dead now. I've run into the exact same problem with the APS software not recognizing my usb connection. The usb cable is connected to the port under the monitor. I've attached other USB peripheral devices to the monitor's USB ports and they work fine so the signal seems to be routing through the monitor correctly.
I am running APS vs 1.1 and snow leopard 10.6.4. I've tired connecting my monitor through the HDMI on my Kona LHI card running a progressive RGB signal and through the DVI connection on my Radeon HD 4870 card. Both give the same results. My computer is an 8 core 2.26 intel xeon,
Any insight would be helpful.
thanks,
Nathan

Hi Nathan.
I've got a little update for you. I called my local HP dealer who took my monitor in for testing. They were able to replicate and analyze the problem and the monitor was replaced. They tested the new one, I took it back to work and lo and behold - same friggin' problem.
I've tried running the APS on a Mac and a Windows machine, hooked up from DVI and HDMI (on a Windows laptop). The only known bug is calibration through the Display Port, which is not currently supported. I'll get back to you when I get further.
Cheers,
Bjarki

For calibration RGB and progressive don't matter as the monitor has it's test patterns built in.
Do a hard restart of the monitor, which means powering off the switch on the bottom.
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by nathan hope on Jul 20, 2010 at 10:13:48 pm |
Thanks for you prompt response guys. I've tried the hard restart with no luck. Is there another way to calibrate the monitor if the APS can't be made to work?
best,
Nathan
| | | | |
• | | | |
Not properly. The APS will work as it would with a standard LCD, creating a profile on your computer, but that doesn't cut it for us.
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by Jeremy Garchow on Jul 20, 2010 at 10:27:23 pm |
Please tell me in detail what you do. Your computer sees the monitor right? When you open display prefs, it's there?
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by nathan hope on Jul 20, 2010 at 10:41:14 pm |
The computer recognizes the display.
When I go into APS program I can highlight the Dreamcolor to calibrate it. The next step is the "HP LP280zx USB Connection". It asks me to make sure the USB cable is connected. I hit "Next" and a dialog window pops up that says to verify that the USB cable is connected between the monitor and the computer and to try again. It basically just stays caught in this loop and I can't move to the next stage which would be "HP LP2480zx Settings".
thanks,
Nathan

That is odd and I have never seen that. Try resetting the monitor back to factory calibration through the front panel
Buttons.

Haven't had a chance to try this yet. Just hooked up the Dreamcolor to my older intel Macbook pro running 10.4.11 and the calibration seems to be working fine. Must be some sort of conflict with new system?
I'll check out your new lead once I reattach the monitor.
thanks for all the help,

This was covered in the article, but the HDP2 takes the guess work out of it. If you work in a exclusively progressive timeline all the time, then it will work. If you view 1080 psf, or SD at anytime, the LHi isn't enough. I recommend the HDP2 as you will never really have to worry about it once it's setup.

Thanks for confirming what I thought I read. I have ordered a new FCP/Mac system that includes the LHI, Dreamcolor and the HDP2. Unfortunatly, I did not have the funds for the color tool. I hope I will be able to make small adjustments to the 709 settings until I can afford the proper claibration tool. If you have any suggestions on setup until I get the tool, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, I do understand. I am working on a very limited budget and that is part of the reason I did not order a FSI monitor to start with.
Thanks,
Mike

I unplugged on of my computer monitors (DVI cable I think)not my output for AJA Kona LHI. So I am comming from the graphics card of the Mac pro. What is the difference in display port and DVI? I guess I should know this but not sure.

[Michael Allen] "What is the difference in display port and DVI? I guess I should know this but not sure."
If your monitor's firmware is not updated, there where calibration problems when using display port, but DVI works just fine. Even if you had a display port to DVI adapter (which is what I use as I hook my display port laptop up to calibrate as my monitors are extended from my MacPro to my desk in another room).
Once you are done with calibration, you switch back HDMI/HDP2 monitoring.
From the release notes of the latest version of the firmware:
VERSION: TR137.SL071.BL167 Rev. A
"FIXES:
- Corrects an issue that prevents calibration over the DisplayPort input using
the HP Calibration Kit."

Yes, I have done all those things. I moved it to another system running 10.4.11 and got another error. Greg Staten a
DreamColor Solutions Architect contacted me and said he would send the old 1.0 version of software for me to try. He also said that I really do not need the calibration tool because it is calibrated at the factory for 709. I guess I will keep trying (and reading).

New everything.... Just put system together. Greg Staten
DreamColor Solutions Architect says that color tool will really come in handy as the monitor ages, but it is factory calibrated and does not need to be calibrated again. I have two machines that will not run the color calibration tool, have tried for 8 hours. Giving up on it today.

Double checking, I did the firmware, I loaded the APS software, but are there Mac drivers I need to load? I do have the disc that came with the monitor but I do not see any mac software on it. I see drivers for windows, but are there drivers for mac and could this cause the problem of the "check the USB connection" loop I am in?

No drivers that I am aware of, no.
So, you have DVI from computer to monitor.
USB from computer to service port of monitor.
APS module on the USB hub of the monitor (not to your computer).
Right?

Yes I have done those things. One more question. In the monitor firmware field all the numbers are correct for the newest version. However, I do not see REV. A (revision A) at the end. Should I see it in the monitor info field.

It is looking for the Windows calibration profile to update, and you are on a mac without the systems level device control over the USB connection.
That is the problem with proper calibration, it requires all of the devices to continuously talk to each other to maintain the profiling and HP makes PC's not Mac's

I don't know if this helps, but I just recently had a similar problem with a DreamColor. On Windows, if I connect from the graphics card DVI into the HDMI port on the monitor, then when I try to calibrate, I get the endless USB loop error saying to connect a USB cable to the monitor, even though the USB cable is connected and the computer sees it using the HP Display Assistant.
If I plug the monitor in using DVI to DVI, then it sees it. I didn't change anything on the computer.
But another issue that I'm having is that the monitor isn't calibrating correctly. The white point is shifted to a green hue. I put some footage up when I first got the monitor and it seemed way to green. I used an X-rite Hubble to read the white balance (with a full screen 1023, 1023, 1023 sample) and it isn't reading what it should be.
Here's the numbers that it read. The first set are what the monitor says is the target for the setting. The second set is what is actually read out on the Hubble software.
WB - 6500 - actual 6225
x .313 y .328 - actual x .319 y .322
RED x .686 y .308 actual x.6910 y .2975
BLUE x .145 y .045 actual x .1274 y .0464
GREEN x .206 y .715 actual x .232 y .7028
My eye is telling me that something is off too.
Anyways... any suggestions?

Hey, Russ. Are you trying to monitor video? By DVI?
| | | | |
• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by Russell Lasson on Nov 1, 2010 at 9:10:26 pm |
So the setup we're going for with this is HDSDI - HDP2 - DreamColor. With the calibration software I couldn't think of anyway to set it up so it would calibrate from the HDSDI path. It's really not as important for what I'm doing either as I'm trying to set up the monitor as full color range (not DCI or Rec709) and then let LUTs from CineSpace do the transformation to whatever color space I need. I can apply these LUTs right out of our color system or using a LUT box like Davio or the HDLink Pro.
So the monitor get's stuck in the USB error loop when it's connected over DVI to HDMI. When I connect it over DVI to DVI, the error goes away. I've tried calibrating it several times, but the white balance still looks a little green and our colorimeter reads it as a little greener than it should. It also looked a little too green out of the box with factory settings too.
Color management can really bite sometimes!

I have gotten my dreamcolor to calibrate a number of times. Then this morning it was time to calibrate again so I hooked up the DVI to my mac so I could calibrate and the monitor is black. If I go into system prefs the mac is seeing the monitor but I don't see the desktop. Tried switching the inputs to the other DVI and HDMI then back but nothing. Tried switching the power switch on the back and my mac screen goes blue for a second and comes back. However the Dreamcolor does not show the desktop. If I feed it HD video from the BMD card through the HDP2 via HDMI I can see the image. Any thoughts?
Also to make sure I am doing proper calibration steps. For working in HD I set the Dreamcolor to REC 709 color space. Then calibrate the monitor with the HP puck. Then feed it video to the HDMI input in order to get 10bit and set the AJA HDP2 to the SMPTE color range.
Thanks!

HDP2 also needs to be for 444 RGB.
I can take a screen grab of the settings later. If you look at the status menu of the Dreamcolor, it will say the dreamcolor engine is on if the hdp2 is setup correctly.
Jeremy

• | | | | | Re: Dreamcolor Calibration by Chad Smith on Apr 11, 2012 at 2:56:47 pm |
Yes I have the HDP2 set to 444 RGB,
Deep Color is ON
RGB Range = SMPTE
Scale = 1:1
SD Format = Normal
Standard = Native
Frame Rate = 23.98 or change to current project setting
HDMI/DVI = HDMI
If I switch the monitor input it will show the status for a few seconds. Color Gamut Remapping is on, however I don't see anything saying "dreamcolor engine on" not clear if I need to send Full RGB range from HDP2 to dream color then the monitor converts to REC 709? Or have both monitor and HDP2 set to SMPTE/REC 709

I had exactly your USB connecting problem. The calibrating software clearly says No Snow Leopard support.
But it does work great if you boot in 32 bit Snow Leopard. Hold 23 during boot.
After calibrating you can boot in 64 bit again.
