 | creating mpeg-2 - why no audio?
by J. Tad Newberry on May 21, 2010 at 4:18:47 pm |
A network wants our show delivered via ftp as an mpeg-2, but whether i tried it out of an FCP timeline via Compressor, or make a QT them drop it onto a droplet, i get a video with no audio. Any help?

and all you compressor settings are?
Have you setting Multiplexing in the Extras tab?

settings are all default mpeg-2 (Program stream) Compressor settings
Extras / Multiplexed MPEG-1/Layer 2 Audio is checked and Program Stream selected (both of these by default)
thanks for the attention

Try Transport Stream. That's what I use, and I get audio every time.

[J. Tad Newberry] "A network wants our show delivered via ftp as an mpeg-2.."
Do you happen to have the delivery specs for that mpeg2 file? I'd look them over very carefully.
Mpeg2's for broadcast typically have a much higher bitrate than the files you can make using standard Apple products. You may need a specialized -- and pricey -- ecryption application specifically for broadcast.

If you're using the Elementary Stream setting in Compressor I don't think it'll export audio.

delivery specs specify "CBR Bitrate: 8Mbs" and the default Compressor setting was two pass VBR, avg 15Mbps and Max at 20Mbps, so it seems to be making the video at a high enough quality, though on playback, it sure doesn't look like something i would want to air! : )

[J. Tad Newberry] "...delivery specs specify "CBR Bitrate: 8Mbs""
Wow, that IS low. I've seen 'em as high as 35Mbs, hence my concern.

8Mbs is normal for SD if that is what is required. If the specs ask for CBR 8Mbs, why are you using VBR at higher bit rates?

Hi Tad,
The audio is there, but QT can not play it.
Play the file with MPGStreamclip to check that.

I am trying to make an MPEG-2 file from a quicktime movie using Compressor and the video is fine but there is no audio. I have tried to make it exporting straight from Final Cut Pro and also just as a self contained quicktime movie - and no joy either way. Anyone any ideas? All suggestions very, very welcome.

What preset did you use in Compressor? Did it have audio? What kind of audio?

Hi Dave
I used both Programme and Transport Streams, both unsuccessfully. Video in MPEG2 fine - but no audio.
The audio is just part of the preset MPEG audio @ 48kHz.
To give the full background. I filmed on XDCAM HD and made the movie in final Cut Pro an an HD movie. I have tried making self contained and reference qt movie files and imported them to Compressor - and also exported direct from FC Pro into Compressor. Nothing works. The resultant MPEG2 video is fine - but the audio just disappears. HELP!!!!!!!!!

Eliminate the obvious: make sure the files you esport from FCP actually HAVE audio. If they don't, you can looks elsewhere for the problem.
And you might give MPEG Streamclip a shot, too.

Yep. The files I am exporting do have audio. I'll try MPEG Streamclip as you suggest. Thank you.

Yep. The files I am exporting do have audio. I'll try MPEG Streamclip as you suggest. Thank you. I have just had a look at MPEG Streamclip but it doesn't seem to export to MPEG-2, just MPEG-4.

Funny running across this now, a year later.
I was having the exact same problem, but once I tried program stream, the audio came with it. I have no idea why.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to get my MPEG-2 files authored to a DVD.
Any suggestions?
