Converting 16:9 to 4:3 with a center cut
by Larry Rochman on Nov 4, 2009 at 4:24:56 pm

Hi.. I've tried asking this before, but never got a good answer. I have 16:9 footage which I would like to convert to 4:3. I want the footage to be full frame, not letterbox. I want to Center cut it so the "wings" get chopped off. I have a Kona Card. Please tell me what settings I need to use to get this "effect". Thanks

When do you want to get this "effect?" When you output? When you capture? With already captured footage? The Kona won't help with footage already captured, but it will with the other two options.

If you are doing this upon ingest you can set it in the SD to SD conversion panel in the kona. It's either H Crop or V Crop, don't remember which.

Otherwise you can change your aspect ratio in FCP to 33 and scale up to fill the screen (Looks better if you do this in after effects though)
