ProRes codecs on machine without FCP

I thought I had read somewhere that installing AppleQmasterNode.mpkg on the FCP install disk will give me access to read the ProRes codecs without having FCP installed on the machine.

Not sure about that. You can get a DECODER on a machine without FCP, but not an ENCODER. QT 7.6 on Mac and PC has a built in decoder, so it will see ProRes files. IF you don't have that version, then you need to install the Decoders from Apple:
