Sequence Settings Affecting QT ref Speed?
by Vicky Mohieddeen on Sep 24, 2009 at 1:35:24 pm

Editing on FCP 6.0, Macbook Pro OS X v 10.5.2

Ok so here's my issue - I am trying to export my sequence as a Quicktime Reference so I can then convert to FLV in Adobe Media Encoder. However it's taking much longer than it should (about an hour for a half hour sequence). I think I might know why but I'm hoping someone might be able to give me a solution because I need this done asap and I don't want another all nighter (I have 6 of these sequences to export and convert)...

Beware this workflow is a disaster, trust me I know not to do this again...

I have 6 long film clips which originated as .mpg files, the job is to put 'em in Final Cut, stick a logo in the corner and export out for web. I converted them all to .mov with Mpeg Streamclip. The first 4 I exported as DV Pal, the last 2 I exported as Apple Motion JPeg - why? I don't know, I didn't even realise I'd done it until I was in FCP. The reason I noticed my mistake was when I saw that the logo (.jpg) looked better on the final 2 that the first 4 (first 4 jaggy and smudgy upon resize, final 2 clear as a bell) - I changed the sequence settings of the first 4 to produce the same visual quality and then spent all day rendering.

So, now I'm exporting, and the 6th one went as fast as you'd expect but the 1st one is being very slow. I believe this may be because of the changed sequence settings being considered an "effect" and so FCP is rendering on export but what I don't understand is why - I've already rendered everything and there are no green or red lines above the timeline (only dark grey/ blue).

Any thoughts..?

Ok, now I'm confused the file is 2GB - that's not a reference file and yet i didn't tick the box for self contained - anything I might be doing wrong...???

Hi Vicky,

If I understand your post correctly, you are applying a logo graphic overlay in FCP over the whole clip? If that is the case, exporting a reference movie won't work the way you intend, since FCP needs to render all new frames because of the logo.

Ok, that's what I thought. Well the good news is I've learned a LOT about FCP during this debacle.

Ona slight aside, I'll just say that with adobe media encoder it was taking up to 3hrs to encode the .mov to .flv so now I'm just exporting to .mov giving it to the web guy and wishing him well ;)
