Been editing a large project the past 6 weeks on my new Intel, see specs below, and my screen just did a horizontal wipe revealing a dimmed same screen and displaying a prompt;
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the reset button"
The project I'm editing is 80hr HDV digitized in ProRes, utilizing internal 3tb, 1.25tb ESata and a few external 1tb FW800. So far I've managed to keep edits on a few tracks and have not started adding transitions, FX or Color Correction. Everything has been running very smooth and the only recent changes are the addition of MX02Max and FSI 17" Monitor.
What just happened to my screen and why did my computer freeze, I've not seen this before.

That is called a KERNAL Panic...and while they mostly appear when there are hardware issues (bad processors, RAM, LB issues), they can rear their ugly heads with a bad software crash. I had one two weeks ago...the first crash ever on this work machine. But, I restarted and things were fine.

So that's a KERNAL panic, just prior to that my MX02 started acting up or at least I think it was the MX02, the video which had been playing just fine all day began to stutter during playback. I tried changing playback settings with no luck so decided to shut down for dinner and when I restarted everything played fine.
Yes, when I restarted everything is fine with exception to lost work and no recent auto save which is kinda strange.

[Michael Harrington]"the video which had been playing just fine all day began to stutter during playback."
This is the first sign of impending trouble. Its an indication of memory getting low (due to memory leaks). I get it often on big FCP projects and occurs more often if I have a PDF open (yeah Adobe software).
The only solution to the 'studdering' is a complete system restart as you noted. But if you persist with it your system will (and did in your case) CRASH!!
So studdering playback = "NEAR KERNEL PANIC"
.... persist with it = "FAR KERNEL PANIC"
(please read the last part carefully and DON'T explain it to the children!)

Kernel Panic.
Happens from time to time when the computer essentially gets stuck in a command loop.
You hold down the power button till it shuts down. Wait about 10 seconds. Restart, then run Disc Utility > Repair Disc Permissions to clean it up.

VERY lucky. While they are rare, they do happen from time to time.
If you get them repeatedly on a system, then you have a more serious issue either with software or hardware.

WOW! 7 years and no Kernel Panic! You have been incredibly lucky. Not that kernel panic is a common thing. But this goes to show how rare it actually is.
Incidentally kernel panic is similar to what Windows users call Blue Screen Of Death or BSOD. I don't think there is a Windows user who has spent 7 years on Windows without knowing what a BSOD is.

OT: Kernel Panic look & other warnings. by Rafael Amador on Sep 2, 2009 at 12:25:55 pm
The look of the kernel panic have changed. Before used to be a black screen with a sort of MS-2 text.
The most frightening message i've ever got was one tell me to immediately switch my MB off.
Was in July 2004 when we reached 47 degrees Celsius.
And not air conditioned at home.

Buddy with a similar system and new MXO2 non-Max version is reporting the "Grey Death" once or twice a day. If he turns off audio scrubbing, all is fine.

Thanks everyone for chiming in on my recent problem, everything is under control, for now.
I must say I like this site much better than that other one where they don't actually help as much as they ask endless questions and then make statements like "why did you do that" or my favorite "why would you ever use that much storage".
I must also say it's too funny looking at the picture of who's offering advice; Shane with his suspicious eye, Baz looking like he might of a past due rocker, Walter and his babe, Rafael and baby and Neil with his "Oh My" expression. Look at these to see if you agree, whatever your take is it will certainly be insight into your personality.
To be fair about all of this I've posted my photo, what can I say my work gets a little messy sometimes.
Thanks again.

Kernel Panic....again by Michael Harrington on Sep 6, 2009 at 8:57:10 pm
FYI, my second Keranl Panic in the past week. I had just turned on the system and began to view clips when it hit. As mentioned earlier the system has been running very good with lots of HDV at ProRes and the only new addition to computer and project is the new Matrox MXO2MAX. I just checked the MXO2 software version and web site and all is up to date.
Based on advice recieved last week I've run disk utility, verify and repair permissions of which listed issues, anything else I should be doing to avoid Kearnel Panic?
Does it make since to uninstall and reinstall Matrox Software?

Mac OS X ver 10.5.8
FCP 6.0.6
I've also had problems with distorted audio on the RCA out to my Mackie 1402, use this for monitoring only. Having problems with a stuttered playback, SDI out to FSI 17" Monitor SDI In. This happens often when I playback/stop/playback quickly and is corrected when I stop, wait a second or two and playback again. My time line is ProRes working with Sony HDV. Any thoughts about this.

I’ve returned from my road trip and checking the settings you asked about.
Did turning off “Audio Scrubbing” in the View menu help?'>Did turning off “Audio Scrubbing” in the View menu help? I just turned off Audio Scrubbing, although I like to use audio scrubbing especially when editing dialog.
In Final Cut Pro choose View > Video Playback.
Select the Matrox MXO2 setting that matches your project’s sequence setting.
This is my current setting;
Clips: 1440x1080, 29.97fps, aspect ratio HD (1440x1080) (16:9)
Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
Sequence: 1440 x 1080 HD (1440x1080) (16:9), 29.97
Compressor: Apple ProRes
I believe these settings to be correct and will see if turning off “Audio Scrubbing” helps, do we expect that to also correct the jittery video problem I described.
