Recommendation: Uncompressed HD workflow
by Bill Brown on Aug 26, 2009 at 7:22:50 pm

Hello,

I'm looking for suggestions from current users / organizations that are using Final Cut Pro in a shared or collaborative workflow.

We will be using two suites, uncompressed 10 bit HD

We already use BlackMagic's I/O for ingest of HD into the respective workstations.

I would like to get recommendations or examples of your shared workflow hardware / software setups.

SAN(s) eSATA to fiber perhaps?
Fiber NIC's
Fiber Switches

I would like to be able to do file-level locking on the collaboration, but would not be opposed to a volume-level locking
solution either...

thank you

Bill

We brought in specialists who deal with installing SAN setups. Running Fibrechannel here and SANmp. Not sure about the server or raid type. I left that to the professionals.

But there is one that Bob Zelin put together here:

we CANNOT DO uncompressed HD. You need a fibre based solution - like Facilis Terrablock, SAN MP, Apple XSAN, etc. The ethernet based solutions from Maxx Digital, 1 Beyond, EditShare, and ProMax will NOT do uncompressed HD. Get ready to spend some money.

Want cheap - use ProRes422HQ, or DVCProHD, and then we can talk.

I realize the cost(s) involved...

wish we could do a Gig E or aggregated solution,
but we have clients that have requested uncompressed 10 bit

any recommnedations on hardware appreciated...

Is there a spicific need for uncompressed?

Why not use one of the many flavors of ProRes?

There are no "technical solutions" to your "artistic problems".
Don't let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Personally, I would love for them to use ProRes, or DVC Pro HD,

not trying to bash any of our clients too much, but some of them get a perception of what is quality, and they can't get away from that.

For instance, a company I used to work for, had clients who would only cut on Avid. They knew the word Avid, and associated it with "quality"

At that shop, we had FCP, Media 100, and (fortunately) an Avid.
The FCP and M100 could easily have accomodated (source was Beta SP)
but they had to have the Avid.

I'm certain that the word "uncompressed" is being used in a similar vein as the old client and their obsession with "Avid"

So, we're basically gearing up to be able to offer services to any client, regardless of their requirements...

Bill,
do you or your clients understand that AVID only uses COMPRESSED HD ? AVID DNxHD is compressed HD. AVID DNxHD 145 is ProRes422 (145Mb/sec), and AVID DNxHD220 is ProRes422HQ (220Mb/sec). The new Apple ProRes4444 is 330Mb/sec - higher than any AVID HD format.

Do you understand that AVID Unity CANNOT do uncompressed HD, which is why AVID developed the DNxHD codecs ? This happened long before Apple developed ProRes422. If you want uncompressed HD on an AVID product, you use AVID Nitris DS (not AVID Nitris DX or Mojo DX, or Adrenaline based products).

With that said, I have already answered your question - if you want uncompressed HD, you use a shared storage product like Facilis Terrablock, or Studio Network Solutions, or a fibre based Apple XSAN system. Does this cost a lot of money - YOU BET IT DOES. Isnt' there a cheaper way to have a shared storage enviornment for uncompressed HD - NO NO NO NO NO.

If you want to experiment, you can try setting up a Small Tree 10 gigabit ethernet solution, but I can assure you that 10 Gigabit ethernet products are EXPENSIVE (especially the 10 Gig switch), and currenty, the connection scheme is CX4 if you want cheap copper, and you are limited to 15 meters with CX4.

Bob,

Yes, I realize that Avid functions in a compressed environment.
I mentioned that as a illustrative example of how a "buzzword" can take hold in an industry.

We are just positioning ourselves so that when a client asks for "uncompressed" we will be able to provide that capability for them.

thank you for your insight and suggestions

Bill
