Hi, all. I have searched the Cow but haven't found an answer to this question:
Can I edit HD Prores on Dual 2.2 Macbook Pro (2GB ram) with an AJA iO HD unit connected to the Firewire 800 port and the Prores media (already captured) on a simultaneously-connected Firewire 400 drive?
Approximately how much storage space is needed for 100 minutes of HD Prores content?
Can I output to tape using this same configuration by connecting a deck to the AJA iO box?

[T. John Wise]"Approximately how much storage space is needed for 100 minutes of HD Prores content? "
what size? What frame rate? What resolution of ProRes? All that factors into the equation.
Digital heaven has a free widget for doing these calculation on their website.

Th short answer is no. AFAK your MBP only has one FW bus. IO HD uses this.
From the AJA FAQ:
Q: Can I use Firewire storage with my Io HD?
A: Yes you can however only if you install a PCIe Firewire card and use it for the Firewire storage.
Which you can't do with a MBP. You could get an express card adapter for another FW bus, but then you might as well go ESATA.
hope that helps

The very first page of the IOHD manual specifically states that "no" firewire devices can be used at the same time as the IOHD because it requires the full bandwidth of the firewire bus. On an older MBP with an express card slot you have the option of a firewire or SATA card.

NO
not without a Separate FW card. There is not enough bandwidth on a single FW bus for the IoHD and any other device at the same time.

For calculating storage needs, how many GBs you'll need, and determining aprox how many MB per second throughput you'll need out of your drive go here. Also, get the widget, a must have little tool.
