mpeg streamer query.
by trel winn on Aug 14, 2009 at 4:03:39 pm

I have been sent some DVDs by a client and need to get them into fcp to edit.

ok so far I have managed to convert the DVD to Mpeg 2

I am presently trying to convert them to a useable format for fcp to be able to edit them using mpeg streamer. as per these instructions I found

http://www.foolishpassion.org/vidding-tips/Vidding-101-2.html

firstly it is taking a very long time to process is this normal?

and secondly about ten minutes in I got an error message saying
"write access error" and it just quit.

I have copied the mpeg 2 files onto an external hardrive and I am also saving the conversion there if that helps.

Can somone please advise me what Im doing wrong?

You shouldn't convert to mpeg 2 and then convert to an FCP edit codec. Do it in one step in MPEG Streamclip. Open the VOB and export ProRes, DV, DVCPro50, whatever. How is your external drive formatted? If it's FAT32 you have a 4GB file size limit. If the converted file is bigger than 4GB the export will fail.
