importing HD mp4 into final cut: error problem

hi guys,
I had some footage shot for me by a friend of mine. He shot it on a HD camera and it was saved straight to disk (the card in his camera). These files were saved to his pc, and then transferred over to my mac.
Each clip has a folder of its own, and in these folders there are five different files; an .MP4, a .SMI, a .PPN, a .XML, and a .BIM. Only the .MP4 and the .SMI are given as options when I try to import a file into FC.
There are two different error for each of these. The .SMI file allows me to import a file but it is just a white picture with a red x in the middle and the words "failed to load". The error for the .MP4 is
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
I am running Final Cut 7 which I had hoped would be able to handle this file format. Any ideas anyone?

This sounds like XDCAM EX footage. What you need to do then is download the XDCAM EX transfer software, or the plugin that makes this importable via LOG AND TRANSFER:
