Did you use Migration? If so, do a complete reinstall of FCS from the original install discs.

also have this problem, did a separate system on a firewire drive and FCP7 worked fine then i migrated my files, back to white screen only. spoke to apple 4 times last suggestion after archiving the OS and installing FCP7 didn't work was to erase my drive and start clean, works now but now i am not sure what conflicted. in the meantime i also installed on my macbook pro without a problem and i have all the same applications/extensions, etc that i have on my dual quadcore.

By any chance is your monitor hooked up via VGA at a resolution of 1920x1200. When I hooked up my monitor via DVI, the problem disappeared. I am working with apple on this and am going to run a test on the VGA hookup at lower resolution and see if that corrects it.

Same problem here! Interresting note is that if you select preview RGB + alpha you can see the clip with the red overlay ( clips with no alpha)
Apple, please ! Anyone reading this thread? This seems like it could be fixed without wipping out everything and re-install.

Yes I notice the same thing with alpha and rgb albeit the image appeared with a red mask and was visible in pause and scrubbing only.
My monitors are attached via dvi
oddly enough I was able to digitize from a 1200a deck with no issues and I could see the images upon digitizing and the files seem fine when viewed in QuickTime

well, interestingly enough problem is gone.
Only thing I did was shut down the computer and unplug the power cord
which reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
the SMC is a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer.
quite weird that this fixed the problem but FCP is working properly now.
It would be great if someone at apple could shed some light about this FCP white canvas problem.
does the SMC has more function than the power functions ????

I take that last post out!!
Problem is back on after restarting mac pro!
And this time reseting SMC doesn't fix the problem.
This is really a pain .
I hope we can get some answer to this white screen problem soon.

here's an other update on the white screen of death problem.
try this an see if it works on your end,
plug your monitor to the other DVI port while computer is on, restart computer and launch FCP
From reading other post about this, seems like it's a problem with the graphic card.
it worked for me, but again it might start again.

Playing around with FCP7 on an external firewire drive with OS and migrated files/app's from my macpro that wont work on my Macpro dual quad core, windows show up white.
Same external drive rebooted to my macbook pro 2.33mhz and FCP7 works fine there.

So now I have a clean OS and FCP7 on my macpro internal drive with no migrated app's/ files that works also. I can't figure where the conflicts are.
hardware, software?
guess i wait for the update.

Bill
what's your monitor set up ?
are you using 2 monitors? is one of them VGA or as a VGA to DVI adapter?
this seems to be the problem, when you're running FCP 7 from the internal startup disk.
when booting up and launching FCP if you see your canvas and viewer white.
quit FCP, unplug the monitor that's VGA or VGA to DVI, go to display pref and select detect display, then relaunch FCP.
hope it helps

e.

Actually you can still use your dual monitor setup,
just make sure you launch FCP 7 with the VGA monitor unplug.
then once FCP is running, plug it back in and select detect display, should work - until they fix the bug.

I spent several hours to fix this problem. My phone call (1 hour) at Apple Support did not fix the issue.

Now my problem is fixed! The workflow:

1. System preferences "Monitors" set to 32768 colors
2. FCP started (still the same problem)
3. FCP terminated
4. System preferences "Monitors" set to 16,7 Mill colors
5. FCP started - the problem seems to be fixed

Best regards

Chris

Hi,

I've got the same problem, white canvas and viewer on my apple cinema display. The only thing that worked for me yesterday was my opening my macbook screen and working from there, sliding the canvas and viewer across to the display (a painful way of working).

Will try all your tips and let you know how it goes. It's not been a fun transition to snow leopard. also problems with my mobile dongle (vodafone) and a few bad crashes here and there.

I tried disconnecting the second monitor then relaunching FCP it did not work, still displayed the white.

Then played around with the Display setting /Color profiles, switched from one to another then back while FCP was running. The white all of a sudden changed to black.

Very weird but it works OK now!

I was having the same problem, but found a solution.

I work on a 15 inch MacBook Pro connected to a 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. When I disconnected my external display, restarted the computer, and opened FCP7 using only my laptop's screen, the problem disappeared. Next, I connected my Cinema Display while my laptop was open, put the computer to sleep, and then woke it up using an external keyboard (laptop closed). When I opened FCP7 the white screen reappeared. I finally restarted my laptop (closed) while connected to my Cinema Display and the issue disappeared.

There is clearly an issue with FCP7 involving the use of external displays, but a simple restart while connected to my Cinema Display did the trick. It seems like many, if not all of you guys are using one or more external displays, which makes me suspect that the problem involves FCP7 and how it is interfacing with the computer's graphics card. This would explain why changing the Display Settings (color profiles, number of colors, etc.) might correct the issue.

I am relieved to discover that the problem is hardware related, rather than software related. I just did a clean install of Snow Leopard and the new Final Cut Studio, so having to start all over again would have been torture.

Hugh

Same problem on my 17" Unibody and 24" cinema display

I am running snow leopard
I cannot find the millions of colors option on my system prefs.
issue happens both when display is connected and when laptop is running solo.

System was migrated from time machine. FCP7 was upgraded from FCP6

I was recently able to fix this issue by creating a new user. Logging in as that user and then lauching final cut. WHite screens were gone. Then I logged out, and logged back in as my normal user and the white screens were still gone. Awesome!

1. Create or switch to another user.
2. Open up FCP
3. Quit FCP
4. Switch to regular user
5. Open FCP
6. Problem Fixed!!!!

Seems to be fixed

After an upgrade all my students had the white screen of death on a single screen iMac running 10.5

After reading this, i did the following

1. leaving FCP running - Launched Sys Prefs
2. Opened display options
3. selected the Colour tab
- This caused a recalibration
4. Back to FCP - Played a video

All ok!

This is my working solution & I hope this helps someone

It seems its just a display/ grpahics setting - so this worked - i simply restored my original LCD calibration and its back working! then you just need to recalibrate.

I also had performed an OS X system restore, and didnt want to clean wipe.

This resoved it. Play with the display settings.

I had this problem this week. After doing everything that everyone said, RGB, trash prefs, new user, millions to thousands to millions, I looked at the color tab in displays (MAC System Prefs) there was no profile for the cinema display. I found that the ColorSync folder was not in the system drive library folder, just a number inside angled brackets. After copying this folder from another computer - rebooted and it worked.

Same problem here, except I have an iMac, so it shouldn't be a problem with external monitors.

We run FCP 7 here at our school on our Mac Pros with no problem. But when I installed FCP 7 (we have a license to do that, so it's legit) on my iMac, the browser and canvas show only white.

I tried importing various clips of various resolutions; I tried checking the alpha / rgb switch; I checked the clips in the Quicktime player (they play fine); I downloaded and installed the latest updates from Apple; I created a new User and tried that. I think I tried everything suggested in this forum; no luck.

A lot of people seem to have this same problem; any body heard from Apple?

Seth,

Did you look at the Color Tab in Displays under System Preferences. Is there a profile for the iMac? If there is, you have done evrything.

Found yet another similar problem - tried DVD Studio Pro - selected one of their menus - it appeared for an instant and then turned white. Imported one m2v file, tried to play it, it turned white. Something in the new FC Studio is making all the videos appear white. But videos show fine in the Quicktime Player.

Another shot in the dark you might have already tried. Uncheck "Show profiles for this display only" and select another profile from the list and try FCP again.

If it solves the problem - recalibrate that profile. The old one might be corrupt.

I believe you have solved this problem! I opened System Preferences, Displays, Color. The only profile that appeared was "iMac." I unchecked "Show profiles for this display only," and 3 other profiles appeared. Then, when I selected any of those - including "iMac," the problem of the white windows in FCP and DVD Studio Pro seemed to go away! I need to check this with my project which is stored on my other drive, but it looks very promising!

How in the world did you know to try such an obscure setting?

In my trouble shooting with all the other remedies, the only thing left was to check the Display. (it was a display problem, after all) The display showed all the resolutions. When I checked the color tab - there was nothing. I found that the ColorSync folder was not in the system drive library folder. After copying this folder from another computer - rebooted and it worked.

Tim Dring in the last post makes a good point about highlighting the iMac setting, if it was there. Mine was not.

Checked it with my other FCP project on my other drive; you solved the problem!

A philosophical question: I would guess that the System Preferences - Displays - Color - Profiles should affect the "look" of the entire screen; and they do; some profiles make it a little warmer, some a little brighter, etc. Why would the Profile affect only the Viewer and Canvas windows in FCP?

It makes you think...

Thank you again for being persistent enough to help me solve this problem (which no one at the Apple FCP forum had any idea how to fix).

In looking back at the posts, Tim Dring posted a similar fix on April 21. For some reason my profiles did not rebuild, but he was having the same problem and it fixed his computers, which were iMacs. So actually, he found the fix for the iMac (and I believe mine as well) I want to give credit where it is due.

It may be a silly comment but...... Is the iMac setting selected(highlighted) ? many of my users see it at the top of the list and assume it is the active profile.

Tim DringRe: FCP Canvas and Viewer show up white in fcp 7 **An Explanation**
by on Aug 24, 2010 at 8:22:31 pm

Ok, so my last post is out of sync as i was replying on the move.

as an explanation as to what i think is happening regarding this issue here is what i have found..

At the college here, we run our iMac's, Mac Books, Mac Minis and Mac Pros on an Active Directory network (not my choice i must add!). Each user has an individual user account that roams with them allowing files and settings to travel too.

The color settings are an individual preference allowing customized desktops..Great, however at each login the mac starts up and just reads the color profile that has been saved in the users preferences.

As all Macs pretty much all the color profiles built in it will use the defined one even if is the wrong monitor/display panel and not automatically re-calibrate which is where going to the color tab of the display preferences sits.

The OS itself will just muddle through along with most programs, the FC suite of programs is, so far, the only program i have found with a specific requirement for the correct profile (i guess it knows the display type and requires the correct profile selected) or in the case of the missing profiles folder, it will fall back to an os default, like the old 640x480 display of windows if something went wrong.

Long winded i know, but just wanted to explain what imho is happening, there may be a solution to this and that is to remove the profile preference at each logoff, forcing a recreation at the next login, something i will be looking into over the next month or too. i will post my findings if anyone is interested.
