Set the truth FREE

As mere mortals we're not supposed to know anything about "un-released products" and Apple has been better at making sure this is so than just about anyone in the business. So I guess what multiple people had told me to expect is now not going to be coming true?
I had heard that Snow Leopard would include an entirely new kind of Quicktime and that the delay of FCStudio was directly related to the fact that FC7 would be running using this entirely new Quicktime. Well... guess THAT'S not the case since FCS 3 is now a shipping product and Snow Leopard is not. Is it just the new Codecs that this buzz was about? Does the FC7 have hooks buried in the code ready to grab ahold of a new Quicktime from day 1?
AND... please someone tell me, before the box arrives next week, does Color 1.5 at least have an open and save system that's not from Unix Mars? I don't want a lot, just for Mac programs to ACT like Mac programs.

The Color interfaces looks pretty much exactly the same. Few things different, like clear indication when you have disabled your grade. But the other stuff is invisible, like working with speed changes and multiclips and the like.
And since Snow Leopard and the new QT have not come out yet, again, we can't comment on how they will work. People who don't know, don't know...and those that do know, can't say.

FCP release is in the normal cycle of the product, I don't know why everyone (or a lot of people) thinks it was delayed. The only thing that is different this time is that there was no preview at NAB, in the past we saw what it was going to do and then waited a couple of months until it shipped.
Also historically the pro apps are always the last to take full advantage of a new OS. The issue will be video card drivers will need a little time to be QT X compatible.

Nick, those multiple people were speculating, or making "best guesses" ... call it what you will.
I had heard that Snow Leopard would include an entirely new kind of Quicktime...
This is already known, that SL will include the all new "Quicktime X"
...and that the delay of FCStudio was directly related to the fact that FC7 would be running using this entirely new Quicktime
And that was the speculative bit. Since NAB back in April many FCS watchers and interweb commentators felt that they had a good explanation for why Apple hadn't released an upgrade to their aging production suite ... and they posted their thoughts, thats all.
Does the FC7 have hooks buried in the code ready to grab ahold of a new Quicktime from day 1 ?

We would have to assume it does because if you look at Apple's White Paper, you'll note that all their tests (well most of them anyway) were done with a pre-release version of Snow Leopard. So obviously it will work with Snow Leopard out of the box and one would hope that after two years of code re-writing and holding the software almost until SL was ready to ship that it would be ready to go with the new Quicktime.
But then again... we might have to wait for FCP 7.5 to get to that point. All depends on whether the QT guys are able to talk to the FCP guys and whether they're allow to talk to the SL guys and of course whether those 5 or so Beta testers out there actually are able to get a hold of the same combination of software and hardware needed to test.....

[Shane Ross]"People who don't know, don't know...and those that do know, can't say."
In another industry, also rife with rumors, we used to have a saying "The ones who are talking don't know and the ones who know aren't talking."

And that becomes an interesting point and something we're likely to not learn for years, if ever.
I was fascinated to read in Wired that during its development Apple had the iPhone's software team working with fake hardware and the hardware team working with fake software. That's the lengths they went to in order to make sure that no one could compromise the secrecy surrounding their new product. In the case of the iPhone it was a very successful strategy. With QT and related products probably not such a good idea.
It's been almost 20 years since I had inside access with some of Apple's people and frankly I don't miss the weekly 180 degree course corrections and the daily 8am to midnight insanity.

The last I worked with Apple it was very much the same way with the Software, QT and OS teams. Nobody was allowed to talk to each other, hence MAJOR bugs with each major release.
However, I've been made aware that FCP 7 is remarkably stable right out of the box. We're going to put it onto an iMac in two weeks and potentially go right into our primary systems so we can get it up and running prior to moving everything over to Snow Leopard in the fall.
