4% speed up question
by Jon Fidler on Jul 3, 2009 at 9:53:27 pm

Hi

I am currently working through the apple fcp tutorial books and in the section about compressor, they mention SD to HD, NTSC to PAL and Interlace to Progressive conversions.

I always thought that you needed to speed the audio up by 4% when converting, but this is not mentioned anywhere, where and how is this relevant?

Thanks

Jon

that's 25 to 24 you're thinking of, or maybe it's vice versa. I always get them mixed up.

my understanding is that if you are using COMPRESSOR, there is no speed up with any conversion.

however it has to work very hard to fit the 24fps into 25fps.
if you use the fastest settings it simply drops or repeats frames, and looks bad,
if you chose the best settings it takes forever

if you have to do this, then one way is to use CINEMA TOLS to CONFORM the clip from 24 to 25fps.

this simply makes it play at a different speed, altering the pitch of the audio.
it's instantaneous,
and then you don't need compressor to try fitting a square peg into a round hole.

If you do a 24 to 25 or a 23.98 to 25 you will have to pitch correct the audio. I recommend an audio pro with either MPEX3 or Pitch N Time to do this job. 24 -25 is 4% and 23.98 to 25 is 4.1%. Beware 23.98 on long form projects however as the correct ratio is a six point decimal number.

4.1% is an approximation which will work fine TVC's and music vids.

Careful because here we are talking about two different processes:
- When Conforming 24/25 or vice. Is necessary the 4% speed/slow.
Keeps the original picture.
- When using Compressor. That´s an Standard Conversion. Re-process the whole picture. Audio doesn´t needs any speed/slow.
