General Error (34) on FCP-6

After 2 months of successful editing, I now have been getting "GENERAL ERROR (34)" when I try to render any movie from an FCP project which lives on an external scratch disk. Some discussion threads say it could be a bad disk, so I should run Disk Utility to repair it. I did so on both local and external drives, and it comes back with no errors-"Appears to be OK". Other threads say I should delete preferences, which I did--still no luck. I tried an experiment where changed my scratch disk to my local drive and created a test project from there (even disconnecting my external drive for good measure) and the film rendered ok. This leads me to believe that if it is a disc problem, it is likely the external and not the local drive. One friend suggested it might be a bandwidth problem thru the firewire (2TB RAID G-Drive) without offering a way to address that. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?
