problems reconnecting media
by Steve A on Apr 29, 2009 at 8:53:18 pm

we are editing a feature doc for HBO on two workstations, both running 6.0.5. We have two external FW800 drives with the same media.

To share work, we move a project file from system #1 to system #2, and drag the most recent sequence into the current project on system 2. We highlight all the clips in the sequence and right click to reconnect media. it seems to be finding most of the clips (a few are listed as " (quotation mark) with no name -- don't know why) but after supposedly connecting the sequence remains white and nothing is relinked.

Any ideas?

In a related issue, we have motion clips created on system 1. if we copy the original motion file and media to system 2, shouldn't we be able to access/edit the clip on system 2 by right clicking and selecting "open in Editor' . That also isn't working.

Thanks.

Steve

YOu should name the drives the EXACT SAME NAME...then you'd have ZERO reconnecting to do. The only thing you would have to do is re-render anything.

Try reconnecing just ONE file and see if you get that quotation...then a few. This is an odd thing that pops up from time to time. Usually it has something to so with permissions...not having access to all the media drives so they don't show up. Try to REPAIR PERMISSIONS on the system drive and the external (if that is an option). Might clear that up.

Thanks Shane. We made a new copy of the project file and reimported it. By doing the reconnect media on the project level instead of the sequence level, it seemed to work better.

Good idea on giving both drives same name. Is there any trick for telling them apart if they're both attached to same system (like an Id number or something findable with Get Info?

If drives don't have the same name, is there a way to tell a motion clip to relink to a different copy of the motion file than the one used to create it?

Thanks again.

Color them in the OS. Apply the RED label to one drive and the BLUE label to the other, then have a piece of paper tape or a sticker on the outside that indicates which one is BLUE and which one is RED.

Sorry, I don't use .motn files in FCP. I render out Quicktimes. And I barely use motion, so I don't know the answer to this one.
