Sony Z1U and Color Correction
by Zevie Tannenbaum on Apr 15, 2009 at 9:08:06 pm

I saw this video on Youtube called Spin,

I contacted the director/editor and he told me they used the Sony Z1U and shot at 25p and then converted to 24p. Color Correction was done in Final Cut Pro. My question is, is the color on the Z1U really have the warm color and professional look or was the the color correction or both?

Thanks,
Zevie

Combination of good camera operator and good colorist.

Great, thanks. Do you think a colorist went nearly every shot?

If you are going for a 'look'. Then you would tweak every shot to keep it consistent. Sure, it takes time.

[Zevie Tannenbaum] "My question is, is the color on the Z1U really have the warm color and professional look or was the the color correction or both? "

One you go into Apple Color, anything is possible, even the 3Way CC tools in FCP. We've done multiple documentaries with the Z1U footage, though we capture everything to DVCPro HD or ProRes and edit in that format.

With any format, any camera, what you end up with on the screen is entirely up to you and/or the colorist.

My experience of grading Z1 footage is that it often looks a tad cold in the skin tones but not highlights.

The video looks well shot and LIT, which is the first ingredient in getting a professional look. It may have been graded in Color but that same look can be made in FCP using the 3 Way Color Corrector, plugins like Nattress gamma filters and a sepia wash (I would use a Lyric plugin to achieve this).

After doing a balance grade, a fair bit of desaturation before the sepia wash and that is the basic look. To bring out the natural red of the old man's jumper, you can also use the 3 Way CC with the limit effect to boost saturation on particular colors. Richard Harrington's recent COW tutorial is an excellent place to start to understand some hidden power in the humble 3 Way CC.

Also, take a look at Magic Bullet Looks from Red Giant. Watch for it to come on sale on one of the large video websites. It's awesome and I use it A LOT! It'll do everything in one plug-in. Look it up and watch the promo vid.
