Steps in editing RED footage in FCP and Color
by Chris Woods on Apr 9, 2009 at 10:15:19 am

Hello, I have another question about editing RED footage in Final Cut and putting the footage in Color.

After some research and talking to a few people that worked in RED, I figured out a workflow, hopefully. Here's a list of steps that I got from a few people, but still I have to try them out. Just wanted to post here to see what everyone thinks.

1. Drag _M files from RED and edit them on the timeline.
2. Once done editing, send to Color.
3. In Color, adjust levels (I'm still learning the program) once done send to Final Cut.
4. In Final Cut, render out video.
5. Export video as Final Cut Movie (Quicktime movie).

Just wondering if that's a good workflow and if I'm missing any steps. Also wondering is it all right to work in the _M files?

I did try the Log and Transfer, but it took awhile to load up a 1 min. clip and once it was done it made it a brand new clip which takes up space on the hard. (I have tons of space though, so that's not that much of a program, but I know RED files are big.)

From talking to people, they said It can still work by working with the _M files, but since they are references files is there another step I have to do before or after I send to Color? If anyone can help that would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. I'm working on a Quad-Core MAC Pro with 6 GB of RAM and working with FCP 6.0.5 and Color 1.0.4.

Using Log and Transfer with RED footage is intended to be used when first copying the footage from the RED drive on to your computer. After you bring it in, then you backup the RED files for archiving.

Anyways, I'd suggest you use RED Rushes to create proxy versions that don't have the "_M" in the name. That way you can reconnect the your sequence to whichever proxy or imported RED file through Log and Transfer that you want. This way, you can edit with the _M proxies and then reconnect to the _H proxies when you're done so Color is seeing the 2K image instead of the 1K version.

I look at Red rushes. How long does it take to convert in that program. I'm looking for the quickest way, I have a big client I'm working for and they want something by next week. Someone also mentioned to download Colorfixer if I have issues with the _M files in Color (which I did).

To create new proxy files, for a whole drive, it only takes about 30 seconds to a minute.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Import all files

2. Select "No Resolution Ext (_F,_H,_M,_P) under the QT Wrappers - Options menu

3. Change Destination folder under QT Wrappers - Destination Folder to Output Folder

4. Under Output, select folder to output proxy files to. I would suggest naming the folder with the type of proxy file that will be in it.

5. Now under QT Wrappers, choose the type of proxy file that you want to export. Don't choose make all wrappers.

6. From there, you can create another set of proxy files at a different resolution. Because each set will have the same name, you can you FCP reconnect media to force connect to the different resolution. Then if you change your sequence settings to match the new resolution, you should be in good shape. You can also reconnect to the new Log & Transfer files if you have them around.

There are a lot of options.

Thanks! This is very helpful. Thanks for the pics to, that helps me out a lot. I'm going to try this. Thanks again and I'm sure I'll have more questions as I work on this project.

Hi,

I'm editing native red footage on final cut 6.0.5. I'm editing the native to make the final exportation easier. However I'm encountering an odd phenomenon. If the footage is unrendered final cut will automatically color match the all shots to the last shot that was selected (i.e. double clicked on). This can be great when I want to instantly match all my footage with the look of one shot BUT the minute I render the footage all the shots will only look how they were originally shot. Is there anyway to keep this effect even after I've rendered the footage?
