Reconnecting P2 DVCPro 720P media
by Les Kaye on Mar 29, 2009 at 9:15:05 pm

2,33 GHz MBP 17"
2TB Hitachi Drive striped array
Firmtek PC eSata card

The worst nightmare - one of a striped pair may be DOA. Hooked up a backup firewire drive containing the original P2 files in folders which correspond to FCP bin names. I tried to follow Shane's advice from a few weeks ago to highlight the clips in the bin & choose Batch Capture. However an error pops up stating (something to the effect) that the Volume is not mounted. So I guess HELP is the order of the day.

The backup firewire does contain about a day's worth of previously transcoded P2 media in .mov format. I can relink these files using reconnect media, although it seems I need to do it in both the browser and timeline separately. While the saintly DRW will be helping to troubleshoot the drive issue tomorrow, I need to prepare for the next scenario(s).

Sincere thanks for any help.

You don't batch capture with P2 material. You Log and Transfer. Is there a method for using "Batch Capture" to reconnect P2 Media? You would need to Log and Transfer the material in I believe and then re-connect it all.

Not really, but close. What you need to do is open the log and transfer window and load up all the P2 cards in to the log and transfer window. Then go back to your bin , highlight the clips you want to reimport and then right click and choose batch capture. At that point FCP will do it's thing after another question or two. That will preserve all of your naming and ins and outs you may have marked.

Thanks guys - I'll give it a whirl tomorrow (with a dupe test project) and report back.

[walter biscardi] "Is there a method for using "Batch Capture" to reconnect P2 Media?"

Yes there is...if the footage has been imported previously, but has been deleted, then all you need to do is mount the drive that you mounted when you imported the first time, then hit BATCH CAPTURE. Although this doesn't work all of the time, especially if you organized the footage after you imported (the original card dumps). SO in this case, what Jeremy says is right...mount all of the cards in the L&T window, THEN Batch Capture.

Darn slick.

Thanks Shane. Don't see how this would work as one of the striped drives went south... In any case, I just did a test with a partial batch of the media from 3 cards (the original spans over a 100) and the 2 scenes I watched reconnected fine.

Thanks guys...

No, the drives you backed up the P2 footage onto, and originally had connected when you imported them the first time.

Wow. This is a nightmare. I'm having the problem now and my project needs to be done in 2 days and it was completed!! When you batch capture should you do 1 clip at a time or highlight them all and try to batch each clip all together? I am trying this now with 1 clip but am I supposed to press ESC or will the computer/camera stop at the end of the timecode for the 1st clip? Please help!!!
